I’ve literally waited a lifetime to watch the late, great William Friedkin’s To Live & Die in L.A (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟), a film which just released on Prime Video. What an outstanding film that includes easily one of the better car chase scenes I’ve ever seen, which comes at no surprise given this is the man who directed The French Connection. This movie undoubtedly met my high expectations & is another reminder that William Friedkin is a titan of cinema. This man is, was, and always will be a legend. To Live & Die in L.A. is a movie filled with curve balls that I highly recommend.
To Live & Die in L.A. follows U.S. Secret Service Agent Richard Chance (played very well by William Petersen), who’s on the hunt for Eric Masters (a young, dashing, Willem Dafoe), a man who specializes in printing counterfeit money across Los Angeles and San Francisco. Within this cat & mouse game is Carl Cody (played so incredibly well by John Turturro), who is caught between Masters & Chance along the way.
Part of why I love this film is Chance & Masters are each written out extremely well. We understand the cop’s motives (Chance) & the criminal’s (Masters). We also see the style in which each operates. The cop uses route force while the criminal uses creative deception. It’s the simultaneous development between the two characters that makes this film unique compared to other crime thrillers. Moreover, the lengths in which Chance is willing to go to entrap Masters is shockingly unpredictable & puts Chance in moral dilemmas that are absolutely worth considering.
William Friedkin was a two-time Oscar nominee for the Oscar for Best Director & a one time winner. He’s responsible for some of the most essential films to come out of Hollywood in the last 50 years, including & especially the aforementioned The French Connection. I say that to say this, which is that Friedkin knows exactly what he’s doing here. Every decision is deliberately executed by a man two steps ahead of the audience. I love that Friedkin purposely shows us the unglamorous parts of LA throughout this film as opposed to the typical shots of Beverly Hills or Venice Beach. Friedkin takes us into LA’s grit & leaves no prisoners. This is down to the final 20 minutes, which is beyond shocking & left my jaw on the floor.
Lastly, a word on two of my favorite actors: Turturro and Dafoe. I’m upset it took me this long to see this film but quietly happy that I was able to share a new experience with these two actors. I’ve spent my life watching Turturro and Dafoe in every role imaginable in every film imaginable. Seeing them both thrive in their prime in this film is an absolute gift. I’ll never be able to get enough of these two geniuses.
This film is free on Prime- if you haven’t seen it, you should.
