I started a newsletter called Notes on Radical Cinema and wrote a brief introduction. I plan to write short, irregular dispatches on what I'm viewing and reading. I'd love some subscribers, and please spread the word! notesonradicalcinema.substack.com/?r=47j0o&utm_c…

The New York Times tries to make Hasan Piker the story. But the real story is actually buried deep down in the article: the near total silence of US politicians as our country's government deliberately destroys the livelihoods and health of millions of Cubans.

Absolutely right! I teach Cuban foreign policy in Africa. And my students are always surprised when I tell them that Cuba was the only country to defeat Apartheid South Africa militarily. Not once but twice (1975 & 1988), protecting Angola from occupation from Apartheid SA and playing big role in independence of Namibia. Cuba’s crucial role in the defeat of the Apartheid regime, at a time when it was supported by the US and its allies, is not a history Europeans and global elites are told or taught. Celebrate Mandela, sure, but don’t ask any questions…

Did you know Fidel Castro is considered a hero across much of Africa? Founding editor of @africasacountry Sean Jacobs explains how the former Cuban leader supported anti-colonial struggles and helped defeat South Africa's apartheid army.

"An uncanny slow cinema meditation on the kind of hyperreal, nonspace of 21st century America... We've got something legit here--an emerging aesthetic that actually responds to our time and its contradictions." @matthiasellis

You can now watch End of History online through @means_tv. They offer a free 7 day trial if you want to check it out. It's about a loser who listens to right wing content while driving to Alaska. The film's production was me and the one actor. I like it. means.tv/programs/end-o…

My big takeaway from observing the blackout is that US civil society feels closer to collapse than the Cuban revolution.

No, thank you for the original post. Here are few more - • Charlie Chaplin is a beloved cultural icon in Kolkata, where he is celebrated for portraying the universal "everyman" or tramp, resonating with the region's artistic and socially conscious ethos. • Kolkata held the world's first exhibition devoted solely to Chaplin • Kolkata-based artist Shuvaprasanna’s exhibition at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity, titled A Genius & The Common Man, features works depicting Chaplin as an eternal figure of labor, dignity, and quiet resistance. • Chaplin is revered by intellectuals and artists in West Bengal for his ability to blend comedy with social satire, critiquing themes of injustice and dictatorship. In 1979, plans were made to honor Chaplin with a life-size statue in the city, aiming to place him in a municipal park later named "Charlie Chaplin Square" ( your post refers to the park), however due to budgetary constraints , the city settled for his hat.

India's first movie theater. Chaplin Cinema, located in the Chowringhee area of Kolkata, was historically significant as India's first permanent movie theater. Established in 1907 by Parsi entrepreneur Jamshedji Framji Madan, the founder of Madan Theatres, it began its journey under the name Elphinstone Picture Palace. The cinema underwent several name changes and transitions across its century-long history: 1907–1930s (Elphinstone Picture Palace): Originally built as a purpose-built venue for cinema, it was considered one of the best moving picture houses in the Orient. 1929: It made history as the first Asian cinema to be equipped with permanent sound facilities. 1930s–1950s: It was renamed Strand Cinema in the 1930s and later became RKO Elphinstone (1934) and then Stand (1939) under Warner Brothers' ownership. 1951–1980s (Minerva Cinema): For several decades, it was popularly known as Minerva Cinema and became a hub for Hollywood films and the city's youth. 1980s–2013 (Chaplin Cinema): After a period of deterioration, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) took over the hall, renovated it, and renamed it Chaplin Cinema to commemorate Charlie Chaplin's 100th birth anniversary. The building was originally designed in a classical style and later redesigned as an Art Deco structure. Satkari Chatterjee, father of the legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar, reportedly worked as a projector operator at the theater during the 1930s. Alas, the hall was demolished in 2013 and has been replaced by a new administrative building for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

The world doesn't appreciate enough that the city of Kolkata created a square in Charlie Chaplin's honor and commissioned a gigantic sculpture of his hat.

It's Walter Rodney's birthday, and I'm taking this opportunity to recommend his groundbreaking book HOW EUROPE UNDERDEVELOPED AFRICA. It is truly a foundation text for understanding the role of imperialism in decimating the Global South while enriching Europe and the US.
