A Tribute to Vin Di Bona The Man Who Made the World Laugh Sitting not far from the man who was honored at the HOLLYWOOD MEDIA PROFESSIONALS tribute – I was amazed all over again at the impact he’s had around the world. Vin Di Bona was my first director at Entertainment Tonight and, for decades, he has given us some of television’s most hilarious moments. As the visionary producer of America's Funniest Home Videos, he didn’t just create a hit show –  he sparked a cultural phenomenon, turning everyday mishaps and spontaneous laughter into a weekly celebration of life’s lighter side. In an industry driven by trends, Di Bona gave us something timeless: the healing power of laughter. From living rooms across America to homes across the globe, his work connected people through giggles, gasps, and shared joy. He reminded us that the funniest, most touching moments aren’t always scripted – they happen when the camera is rolling and life takes an unexpected turn. Vin Di Bona became a household name through the happiness he delivered. Millions grew up with his shows as a backdrop to family dinners and weekend rituals. He proved that humor is a universal language – and he spoke it fluently, generously, and with heart. He dared to believe that laughter matters.  And as the show goes on, we need it more than ever in these troubled times.  So I thank Vin for the joy, the giggles, the memories that still make me smile and the ones he’ll keep bringing us because I know the idea of retirement gets a laugh from him.

Nicole Kidman created a stir at this year’s Venice Film Festival - she won best actress for Babygirl. I had to find out how hubby, Keith Urban, felt about Nicole baring all. She told me, "He loved the movie and he understands me as an artist." Nicole is on the Oscar short list!

Kathy Bates is a hit already! Her new series - a twist on Matlock on @CBS - has already set record viewership numbers for a premiere. I spoke with her for @SatEvePost and she told me the role is a "tremendous challenge" but that's why she loves it: saturdayeveningpost.com/2024/08/3-ques…

At the premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, I saw more than a few clown-faced look-alikes in the audience. The director, Todd Phillips, stepped on stage to introduce the much-anticipated sequel. He admitted “it might not be what you are expecting." How right he was! As the lights went down, a voice from the back row boomed, “Let’s go!” And we did! A wild ride full of surprises, not the least of which is a string of musical numbers that prove Joaquin Phoenix can sing and burn up the screen with his acting. The series of duets added a powerful dimension to a dark and gruesome ending. See it in IMAX (if you can) to feel like you are in the middle of the earth-shattering action scenes. I got to talk to Lady Gaga - almost unrecognizable with flaming red hair - and she told me “The emotional messages of this movie are so important to me. I wanted to do great things for the film.” Is singing and dancing in a movie based on a wild comic book character a gamble? Maybe so, but I guarantee you won’t forget it!

I loved James Earl Jones’ laugh and his powerful voice that will forever echo in our memories. Quite a legacy for a kid who was afraid to speak because he stuttered! He opened the door for so many great black actors to come. #RIPJamesEarlJones

In this time of violent world turmoil, famed writer photographer Gordon Parks left us a powerful poem reminding us of the toll bloody battlefields leave behind. Read by Avery Brooks (Star Trek). It couldn’t be more timely: youtu.be/2pcnWPCi-CY

So long to Bob Newhart, a friend who always left me and millions laughing. He was the master of laid back deadpan humor but not without zingers. Bob told me, “The only way to survive is with laughter." It’s going to be tougher without him.

I'll miss the real Donald Sutherland, warm, caring and fiercely intelligent. It reminds me how completely he disappeared into every role from "Ordinary People" and "Klute" to "Mash." He told me, "The beauty of film is that it captures a moment in time and preserves it forever." Thanks for the memories Donald.
