An important investigation by The Irish Times and 🇷🇺 journalists has revealed how Ireland, as an 🇪🇺 member state, has become a critically important supplier of raw materials to Russia’s military-industrial complex and a major source of income for a 🇷🇺 oligarch. Strategically vital raw material for the aluminium used in the production of Russian rockets is shipped in hundreds of thousands of tonnes every year to plants owned by Oleg Deripaska. The oligarch, who has close ties to Vladimir Putin, is subject to 🇪🇺 sanctions. The journalists have exposed the direct link between Russia’s military-industrial complex and the factories of this sanctioned oligarch. The investigation presents compelling evidence that the intermediary company is not independent but merely a front designed to shield the Rusal company from European sanctions and to conceal its direct involvement in weapons production. This investigation highlights a glaring loophole in 🇪🇺 sanctions legislation. First, it concerns the export of strategically important raw materials to a country that poses a direct threat to the EU and is at war with its ally, Ukraine. Great points here by @jenoconnell. People constantly spin the need for more hotels as a binary choice (more hotels = less housing/art)…until they need to book a room and are shocked by the price. These things should run hand in hand with a bit of vision and strategy.
