"Telling someone to 'just comply with law enforcement' isn't helpful when ICE has spent the past year acting less like law enforcement and more like a lawless militia." @ronnychieng

New: @lachicamayra, former executive director of Latino Victory Project and former executive director of Build Back Together, is planning to run as an independent for the district where she grew up and which @RepChuyGarcia currently represents.
I'm told by a person familiar with her campaign that she was spurred to run two weeks ago when Rep. Garcia "attempted to coronate his chief of staff, as she believes voters in her home district deserve a choice in who represents them."
She will be making an announcement in the next few weeks, the person tells me.

A highlight at the Chronicle this week: Melanie Lundquist, one of the nation’s most prolific donors, stopped by our offices for a conversation with our staff. Lundquist, who has appeared on our Philanthropy 50 (#PHIL50) ranking of most-generous donors and a Giving Pledger, offered thoughts on what’s important for us to cover – and where she sees room for improvement in philanthropy.
One area where Melanie especially wants to see philanthropic action: protecting democracy. During our discussion, Lundquist pulled out a print copy of our 2019 issue with this cover story: Can Philanthropy Save Democracy?, an issue she keeps with her to show others.
She also pulled out of her briefcase our latest print issue and pointed to how our piece on Jim Barksdale’s “Mississippi Miracle” will help her in her work as a founding donor and vice board chair of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools.
Do you have a Chronicle of Philanthropy story or webinar that you recommend to colleagues? Tell us about it in the comments!

ALMOST A WEEK IN AND THEY STILL DON'T GET IT
Acyn@Acyn
Perino: You have to stop at with the Twitter thing. If I were his wife, I would say you are making a fool of yourself, stop it… He's got a big job as governor of California but if he wants an even bigger job, he has to be a little more serious.

That scum Stephen Miller is running Trump’s government & dog walking the President.
Splitting up families.
Deploying soldiers in parks.
Raiding farms & chasing down farmworkers.
Trump is either getting played like a fool, or he’s lying to the American people.
L.A. TACO🌴🌮@LATACO
From Camarillo to Carpinteria, firing tear gas and less lethals at children, congressman being denied entry by soldiers, and one lone man tries to stop a military convoy with his El Camino. Raids are still happening over L.A. today, btw, and Santa Ana is being hit especially hard right now.

BREAKING: The court just confirmed what we all know — the military belongs on the battlefield, not on our city streets.
This win is not just for California, but the nation.
It’s a check on a man whose authoritarian tendencies are increasing by the day.
End the illegal militarization of Los Angeles now, @realDonaldTrump.
History is watching.

As the federal government conducts chaotic immigration sweeps across the country, the state is deploying additional CHP to maintain safety on Los Angeles highways to keep the peace. It's not their job to assist in federal immigration enforcement.
The federal government is sowing chaos so they can have an excuse to escalate. That is not the way any civilized country behaves.
