We’re ¾ of the way through our campaign to protect jury trial. As JUSTICE Council member @adams_bhatti highlights, juries ensure justice reflects public values and act as a safeguard against bias. Support our work: bit.ly/4b7fEEK

✍️ Plans to limit jury trials will push 1000s of cases into magistrates’ courts, where legal aid is harder to access, warns our chief exec Fiona Rutherford. This will expose victims to re-traumatisation & increase the risk of miscarriages of justice. thetimes.com/uk/law/article…

Cutting jury trials risks more miscarriages of justice - writes Fiona Rutherford ceo of @JUSTICEhq in @thetimes. Increasing the number and levels of cases in the magistrates’ courts will mean that it will be harder for the accused to get legal aid - resulting in more representing themselves, a process that we who work in criminal law know from experience will cause further delays. Although there are restrictions on an accused cross-examining in certain types of cases, that does not apply to all - so the government’s proposals will also result in defendants cross-examining the victims of some serious offences. thetimes.com/article/dcee8c…

Our Chief Executive, Fiona Rutherford, warned MPs that restricting jury trials could mean more defendants cross-examining victims. Thousands more cases will be heard in magistrates’ courts, where free legal support is harder to access - forcing defendants to act as lawyers.

As Keir Monteith KC highlights, juries are a vital safeguard in our justice system, bringing diversity into decision-making that the judiciary does not reflect. Removing them risks inequality and undermines trust. Donate & support us in protecting them: bit.ly/4b7fEEK
