Exciting base running play in 10th inning of last night’s Cub-Pirate game. With two outs Ian Happ scores from 2B on a LD hit at the CF. 1) Great turn at 3B. Really leans in towards the infield. 2) Good job reading the catcher’s positioning & sliding inside. 3) Plus help from on deck hitter(PCA) to direct his slide.

Detroit Tigers with a different lead off approach at 3B. Lead inside the line in fair territory to be more efficient in occupying the throwing lane & making it tough on the left side infielders to find an opening. It appears that they only do it when the hitter’s spray chart indicates that he will not hit balls down the 3B line fair. In this case it was LHP on LHH.

Garrett Hampson with a BHB to 3B 1) Early show . Better too early than too late. 2) Eyes & bat connected. 3) Good angle. Bat pointed towards 1st base coach. 4) Good speed & direction. Not too fine. 5) Sees ball down then runs.

Cubs Carson Kelly with 1.88 Glove to Glove/.67 Transfer throw out with runners on 1B & 3B & no outs. Great tag by Nico Hoerner. Key takeaways: 1) Kelley maintains his line to 2B while”raking” a glove side pitch across his body. 2) Kelly gets his right foot down in a hurry. No long step to gain momentum. 3) Throw is up the 1B line.

Very creative double play feed by the Cubs Alex Bregman. Ranging far to his left & giving ground he has few options to make this play without having it run up & away from the second baseman & probably end up down the RF/1B line.

Dillon Dingler catcher’s pick at 2B. Pop Time 1.84 Transfer .60 & on the money. One too many shuffles from base runner. Note the minimal footwork & momentum gained. Right foot down in a hurry. Ball transferred down out of his glove at his sternum into a supinated throwing hand.

Cubs Miguel Amaya with a nice strike save on a big lateral target miss. The key is a still body with minimal lateral slide.

@JWonCATCHING Sorry Coach. Firsthand experience coaching and playing. BTW, you, Coach Polk, and others are on my Mt. Rushmore of coaching idols. Got my photo taken with you on the Cape and sat with you before a MiLB spring training game. In my mind one of the best in the history of the game.

This is how you fight to get out of a run down/trying to turn adversity into victory. Take special note of when he was about to be tagged out from behind. He fell down & went perpendicular to the base line to present a small target to the tagger who missed the tag.
