Donald Trump votes by mail. But this week, he signed an Executive Order so you can’t. Why? Because he is scared of your power, and he is scared of losing the midterms.

A few thoughts ahead of the President’s speech tonight.

Today’s Artemis II launch marks a major step forward in space exploration. I have had the privilege of spending time with this crew and seeing their discipline and commitment up close. As they begin this mission, I am wishing them a safe journey and a safe return home. Reid, Victor, Christina, and Jeremy: Thank you for your service and for setting the standard of excellence, alongside the teams at @NASA who made this possible. You make the United States and Canada proud.

When systems fall short, people step up. At MidTown Market in Cleveland, I stood with Juanita, Rep. Shontel Brown, and volunteers who are making sure their community is cared for. Now we need leadership that meets them there.

Long before today’s ruling, we knew social media was harming our young people. Teens, parents, advocates, and even casual observers begged tech and elected leaders to take action. While we applaud this decision, we have much more work to do to protect young people online and support their mental health and wellness.

I know so many of us have been struggling as we watch the chaos and cruelty inflicted by the current administration. But while on the road this year, I have been thinking about and asking the question: What makes you proud to be an American? I hope we can hold on to that pride as we work together, fight back, and consider how we rebuild as a nation.

Reverend Jesse Jackson was a strategist, organizer, coalition-builder, mentor, and friend. He dedicated his life to breaking down barriers and taught us when a barrier falls for one of the locked out, it opens the doors for all. Today, we said thank you and goodbye to Rev. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Reverend Jesse Jackson was one of America’s greatest patriots. He spent his life summoning all of us to fulfill the promise of America and building the coalitions to make that promise real. A son of Greenville, South Carolina, Reverend Jackson first rose to the national stage as one of the young leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. His presidential runs in 1984 and 1988 electrified millions of Americans and showed them what could be possible. From Washington, DC to the Bay Area, from the Mississippi Delta to Appalachia, from South Africa to the South Side of Chicago, Reverend Jackson gave a voice to people who were removed from power and politics. He let us know our voices mattered. He instilled in us that we were somebody. And he widened the path for generations to follow in his footsteps and lead. As a young law student, I would drive back and forth from Oakland, where I lived, to San Francisco, where I went to school. I had a bumper sticker in the back window of my car that read: “Jesse Jackson for President.” As I would drive across the Bay Bridge, you would not believe how people from every walk of life would give me a thumbs up or honk of support. They were small interactions, but they exemplified Reverend Jackson’s life work — lifting up the dignity of working people, building community and coalitions, and strengthening our democracy and nation. I was proud to partner with and learn from him on this work throughout my career, and I am so grateful for the time we spent together this January. Reverend Jackson was a selfless leader, mentor, and friend to me and so many others. Doug and I are praying for Jacqueline, their children and grandchildren, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and the millions of people across our country and around the world whose lives he impacted. Today and every day, we will carry forward his call to “Keep hope alive.”

In Macon, Georgia, I heard from people who are doing the work of bringing folks together every day. Travis is a local bartender who works to make his space welcoming for people from all walks of life. Thank you, Travis and The Rookery, for the work you do to build community.

The Trump administration’s attempt to indict six Democratic lawmakers was an outrageous abuse of power and perhaps its most brazen attack on freedom of speech so far. We should all be grateful to the citizens serving on this grand jury who saw through what the Trump Justice Department tried to do and stood up for the rule of law. Every Republican lawmaker should condemn this effort to criminalize the activity of a coequal branch of government. Today, it was Democrats being targeted by Trump — but any of them could be next.

No one believes this cover up from the White House, especially since they originally defended the post. We are all clear-eyed about who Donald Trump is and what he believes.
