‘The India-Jamaica story is written in runs, written in respect, written in friendship.’ Joined Prime Minister @AndrewHolnessJM in formally dedicating the electronic scoreboard at Sabina Park, gifted by India. ‘May this scoreboard count many great innings to come. Among them, that of 🇮🇳-🇯🇲 friendship.’ PS: Chris @henrygayle was missed.

The Senate, on Friday (May 1), passed the Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act to provide stronger protection for children in the digital space, and enable more effective investigation and prosecution of cyber offences by law enforcement. The legislation introduces harsher punishments for those who target children, including imprisonment of up to 20 years where an offence is committed against an individual under 18 years, through access to any computer programme or data.

It was my great pleasure to welcome to Kingston, His Excellency, Dr. S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India. Not only is it important to note that this the first bilateral visit to Jamaica of an External Affairs Minister of India, but we are agreed that in a difficult world, it is always good to have discussions with trusted friends. I look forward to our engagements ahead as we continue to strengthen the longstanding ties between our countries. @DrSJaishankar @MEABharat @hcikingston

Women are 28 times more likely to be the victims of non-consensual intimate image publication/sharing. Thank you @kaminajsmith📌. This message must be reinforced again & again. This is the kind of substance & messaging we need from lawmakers.

Always an honour to pilot legislation that protects Jamaicans. The #Cybercrimes Act now has stronger penalties for offences against children and creates a new offence to provide stronger protection of victims of #revengeporn - again with strong penalties to demonstrate the seriousness with which we believe this type of crime should be treated. Important that technology neutrality continues to enable enforcement across technologies and platforms - this will support the work of JaCIRT, MOCA and the JCF in their important roles as we do our best to outpace criminals on all fronts! Kudos to Ministers @darylvazmp and @Aowheatley who ran the relay to get these improvements over the line. revonews.ai/news/senate-ap…

Jamaica joined the United States, alongside stakeholders including the American Chamber of Commerce Jamaica @amchamjamaica and other private sector partners, for the launch of Freedom 250, a series of engagements marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. During her remarks last Friday (April 24), Senator the Honourable @kaminajsmith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, highlighted the strong economic and commercial ties between Jamaica and the United States, pointing to expanded opportunities for innovation and investment in areas of shared interest. The Foreign Minister also expressed appreciation to Mr. Scott Renner, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, and his team for their Government’s contribution of approximately US$22 million in humanitarian aid, which has been supporting Jamaica’s recovery following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

Minister Floyd Green stated that the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA) will operate under Jamaica’s accountability framework, with oversight from the Auditor General and clear reporting and audit requirements to ensure transparency. Minister Green noted that while there may be differing views on its structure, the focus must remain on delivering timely and effective reconstruction following Hurricane Melissa. NaRRA has the authority to act quickly, including fast-tracking approvals and making key decisions on rebuilding and land use. Referencing the 2011 Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand, Minister highlighted a similar centralized recovery model that delivered results within a short timeframe. We need to move forward without delay so reconstruction can begin and communities can see real progress.

Minister Christopher Tufton, speaking during last evening’s NaRRA debate, urged immediate, decisive action to accelerate reconstruction and build resilience for the over 500,000 Jamaicans affected. He reiterated that in a crisis speed and clear decision‑making save lives, citing Jamaica’s adaptive COVID‑19 response and international examples (New Zealand, Australia, Peru) of special recovery arrangements. Minister Tufton called on Parliament and agencies to put people first, streamline processes, and avoid letting bureaucracy or perfectionism delay relief and recovery.
