Trump is making clear the real strategic objective of his war on Iran: integrate Israel with the region by the acceptance of the Abraham Accords by Saudi Arabia and Qatar in particular. It is surprising that the Trump administration is making its objective even more difficult to achieve by making it publicly mandatory for these two countries to join the Accords. Worse, speaking of Iran joining the Abraham Accords when US negotiations with Iran already involve complex issues of its nuclear programme, enrichment, Strait of Hormuz, its missile capability and regional role have first to be settled makes no diplomatic sense. There is no quid pro quo demanded of Israel, the assumption being that Israeli policies on the two state solution., Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria are not relevant to full reconciliation in West Asia. Professional diplomacy is needed. India would welcome a stable peace in West Asia but public agenda setting from the outside will not help in achieving this goal.
Nisarg Dalal@NisargSDalal

If one actually reads the fine print, Pak has been exempted - “It may be possible that one or two have a reason for not doing so, and that will be accepted”. It is the Saudis and the Qataris who have been explicitly asked to sign the Accords. In any case, this is a non-starter.

Henry Kissinger in March 2014, with common sense and a warning, which would today be smeared and censored by our political-media establishment as "Russian propaganda": "Far too often the Ukrainian issue is posed as a showdown: whether Ukraine joins the East or the West. But if Ukraine is to survive and thrive, it must not be either side’s outpost against the other—it should function as a bridge between them… The west is largely Catholic; the east largely Russian Orthodox. The west speaks Ukrainian; the east speaks mostly Russian. Any attempt by one wing of Ukraine to dominate the other—as has been the pattern—would lead eventually to civil war or break up. To treat Ukraine as part of an East-West confrontation would scuttle for decades any prospect to bring Russia and the West—especially Russia and Europe—into a cooperative international system" ** Just a reminder that the people who sell themselves as "supporting Ukraine" destroyed the country washingtonpost.com/opinions/henry…

His characterisation of the nuclear deal negotiated by the Obama administration is driven by partisan politics. The US was not the sole negotiator. Russia, China. France, UK and Germany were involved. The deal was ratified by the UNSC. The Iranian nuclear programme was subject to stringent IAEA inspections. Iran committed itself not to develop nuclear weapons under the JCPOA. The real issue is not Iran’s nuclear programme but eliminating the last anti- Israel bastion in the region. A bastion that has supported anti Israeli groups in the region. One that has developed missile capabilities to target Israel. In other words, the real goal is regime change. Trump has claimed obliteration of Iran’s nuclear capability. If so, why is the nuclear issue centre stage? As regards enriched uranium stockpile Iran agreed to dilute it irreversibly to 3.67 % as per Omani mediator. Iran’s top leadership was decapitated to bring about regime change, but without success. Trump’s call for countries of the region to join the Abraham Accords, including Iran, indicates Trump’s real goal. Israel’s security is the core issue. @dmuthuk

For Trump’s calibre, this is an extremely decent post about Iran. Looks like things are moving in the right direction.

It is because of increased European support for Ukraine that the conflict continues. The answer lies not in fuelling a proxy war but striving for a negotiated solution with reliance on diplomacy. By giving more capacity to Ukraine to strike at targets deep into Russia Europe is opting out of the diplomatic route to a solution. The divide between Europe and Russia has already become very deep and will become almost unbridgeable if Russia continues to be treated as an inveterate enemy. With Europe’s ties with the US under stress and the transatlantic alliance developing cracks, and its ties with Russia in a state of collapse, Europe is losing ground internationally. India seeks closer and more productive ties with Europe while retaining its long standing ties with Russia. We have a vested interest in peace in Europe.
Alexander Stubb@alexstubb

Last night Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on Kyiv. Once again, it targeted residential areas and civilian infrastructure.  This senseless war of aggression has to be stopped. We must continue putting pressure on Russia’s war machine and increase our support to Ukraine.

All the leaders participating in this call with Trump are political leaders in charge of their countries, heads of state or government, except, glaringly, Field Marshal Munir of Pakistan. The US treats him as the political head of Pakistan, ignoring Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister, who is considered a side kick and not worthy of participating along with his political peers in the region in this Oval Office consultation . The absence of Oman is noteworthy.

“I was pleased to invite Prime Minister Modi to the White House on behalf of the President.” The formulation is odd. Rubio does not seem to be carrying any letter from Trump Inviting Prime Minister Modi to make an official visit to the US. It is an oral invitation to visit the White House, not the US. The visit to the White House is not contextualised. Normally, Modi and Trump should meet at the G7 summit in France mid-June. That would be the occasion to announce a visit. Modi will also be attending the G20 summit in Florida under US presidency. The obvious implication of this vague invitation also is that Trump is not intending to visit India for a Quad summit. In any case, a positive agenda has to be developed and several wrinkles in the relationship caused by the Trump administration have to be ironed out before any visit to the White House by Modi is envisaged.
Secretary Marco Rubio@SecRubio

In New Delhi, I met with Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi to underscore the importance of the U.S.-India relationship. We discussed the situation in the Middle East and U.S.-India partnership in energy, securing critical supply chains, and collaboration on emerging technologies. I was pleased to invite Prime Minister Modi to the White House on behalf of the President.

In a multi religious society like India’s followers of different religions should live and let live. Conversions violate this basic principle. Hinduism doesn’t believe in conversion. India is a vastly majority Hindu country. This ethos of the country should define relations between followers of different faiths. Charity should be a social, humanitarian act, not one of religious doctrine or one with religious overtones. Why should charity be a mission? The history of conversions in India has been politically destructive. Other countries should not interfere in our internal affairs on behalf of any religious group. This only creates suspicion and mistrust.

For those who may be wondering what this is all about, this is a problem of geometry and it asks : What is the maximum number of pairs of points in a set of \(n\) points on a 2D plane that can be exactly one unit of distance apart? Apparently Open AI has solved this at Pakistan’s request and is being used as a tool by the Field Marshal to calculate and reduce the unit distance that is keeping the US and Iran apart.
David Keyes@DavidMKeyes

Asim Munir solved the planar unit distance problem years ago but was too humble to tell anyone.

In seeking to expose a nobody you make him or her a somebody. She was seeking publicity and she is being given what she wants.
Adit@IndicSociety

There’s a reason, @HelleLyngSvends, why I as an Indian don’t crash “Press Briefings” asking uninformed questions about Norway - because I actually know enough to stay silent. You, however, chose to expose both your intellectual bankruptcy and dishonesty by reffing to the Press Freedom Index yet again, an opaque, poorly funded metric that absurdly rates Pakistan as quasi-authoritarian and Qatar as a “full-blown Islamic nation” (both patronising Jihad) above India. That really shows how much of a critical thinker you really are Kudos to @GaurieD for absolutely shredding this Greta Thunberg of journalism, exposing her work as nothing more than cheap activism masquerading as journalism.

A light humorous moment in Italy which is part of rapport building diplomacy is being treated as an insult to India. The logic of this is incomprehensible. How would Modi not going to Europe to open up trade, technology and investment opportunities and solidify support for the earliest ratification of the India- EU FTA would help in addressing issues arising from the war on Iran and the closure of the Hormuz Strait? By this logic, all leaders of the Global South should stay at home because many are suffering even more than India because exploring cooperation at the international level to alleviate the challenges that have arisen is an insult to their own peoples. Modi should not therefore go to the G7 summit in France and G 20 in the US? And cancel all international engagements? This self- imposed travel ban should apply to EAM too? India should take a time- out in international diplomacy because that is wasteful in times of difficulties or crises? Politicking should not reach such absurd levels. Will this travel ban also apply to those who advocate it?
Mahesh Jethmalani@JethmalaniM

The Modi-Meloni “Melody” reel has gone viral globally, and predictably, the opposition is having a meltdown. Because for them, India’s diplomacy must always look apologetic, joyless and insecure. They cannot digest a Prime Minister who can build strategic partnerships, command global respect, strengthen India’s position with Europe, and still connect with people in a language the internet understands. Rahul Gandhi having a meltdown over Modi-Meloni going viral is not surprising. This is a man who has never understood the difference between diplomacy and insecurity. When India’s Prime Minister commands global warmth, Rahul calls it drama. When India builds strategic partnerships, he calls it optics. When India is liked, watched and respected, his ecosystem starts sulking. But before Rahul Gandhi lectures anyone on national interest, Indians should remember the record. This is the man around who went partying after 26/11 in my city Mumbai, when India was still mourning. This is the man who referred to terrorist Masood Azhar as “Masood Azhar ji”. This is the man who called the aftermath of surgical strikes “khoon ki dalali”. This is the man whose party ecosystem repeatedly demanded proof when India hit terror across the border. This is the man who stood with the JNU crowd when Afzal Guru slogans had shaken the nation. This is the man whose party first denied and then admitted his meeting with the Chinese envoy during Doklam stand-off. This is the man who goes abroad without disclosing where money is coming from to fund his trips. So forgive us if we do not take lectures on diplomacy from Rahul Gandhi. Modi’s diplomacy is turning India into a respected global power. Rahul’s politics is still stuck in resentment, entitlement and national self-loathing. There is a term called 'soft-power' in the diplomatic dictionary and the ilk of Rahul Gandhi won't know that because India no longer applies it to the Masood Azhars of the world.

Why are we giving her so much importance? By interviewing her she gets the attention and publicity she wants. We are playing her game of increasing her credibility as a journalist. She should be ignored . She should be allowed to sink into irrelevance but we are doing the opposite by platforming her.
Stop Hindu Hate Advocacy Network (SHHAN)@HinduHate

This interview by @GaurieD is an absolute eye-opener on how Westerners create, believe and spread their narrative about India. 100% what the Norwegian journalist did wasn't organic. When asked about the racist snake-charmer stereotyping, the Norwegian journalist says she “hasn’t read the article” and refuses to condemn it — even after being reminded that the imagery is straight from British colonial times. But the moment Gaurie mentions her newspaper’s history as a mouthpiece of the Norwegian Labour Party, she gets offended and says the paper’s past “isn’t relevant”. So colonial-era racist tropes about India are fine… but pointing out the newspaper’s own political links is offensive? When asked what she actually knows about India, she says “curry and yoga”. That’s it. Yet this is the same person who heckled PM Modi about human rights and minority issues in India. The arrogance is next level.

A rather annoying cartoon from a self- satisfied country of 5.6 million people with no historical or civilisational depth, or experience of handling complex and diverse societies or the depth of challenges that a country of 1.4 billion people faces. Resorting to an offensive snake charmer stereotype of India, that has a racist overtone. India does not need Norwegian oil. It has huge oil rich countries in its neighbourhood. Doesn’t need to charm them as India is a huge market, being the second largest importer of oil. The cartoon reflects the shallowness of Norway’s journalism as this is the country’s largest newspaper.

No request from Pakistan this time, from his favourite Field Marshal! The request folder contains extra options now! Good thing though that fresh attacks on Iran have been postponed. The consequences of renewed bombing would have been devastating for the region and the global economy. Indian interests would have been gravely jeopardised. It is time that the international community had the courage to join hands to put pressure on Trump to cease keeping this needlessly created crisis on the boil. The Iranian nuclear issue is by no means at the centre of global political and security concerns. @tparsi
Trita Parsi@tparsi

Key things from Trump's latest message declaring that he won't restart the war with Iran: 1. Says he was asked by the leaders of Qatar, KSA, and UAE. Could be true, but either way, provides him with a face-saving exit from his previous threats. 2. Says serious negotiations are now taking place. They have been taking place all weekend, but a small breakthrough may have been achieved. 3. Emphasizes only "no nuclear weapons" as criterion for his deal. No mention of enrichment or stockpile. May prove crucial. 4. Overall, tries to give the impression that he is in control and that only he dictates the direction of the situation. None of that is entirely true, but understandable that he wants to give that impression. Conclusion: Once again, Trump has realized that escalation will end up badly for the US. That does not necessarily mean, though, that the necessary realism, discipline, and creativity will be mustered for the talks.
