78,557 tech workers were laid off in the first three months of 2026. Nearly half were reportedly replaced by AI.
A new paper from the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University warns that every company doing this may be racing toward the same cliff. And knowing the cliff is there may not stop them.
The paper calls it The AI Layoff Trap.
Here is the trap:
When one company replaces workers with AI, it cuts costs, boosts margins, and looks smarter than competitors.
But every worker removed is also a customer who spends less.
They stop buying products. Delay subscriptions. Cut spending across the economy.
When enough companies do this, consumer demand weakens. That hurts every business in the market.
So competitors automate too. To keep up. To survive.
Researchers describe this as a Prisoner’s Dilemma:
Each company is making the rational choice for itself.
But together, they may be destroying the demand they all depend on.
As the paper puts it:
“Firms automate their way to boundless productivity and zero demand.”
And the smarter AI becomes, the worse the trap can get.
Better AI does not automatically solve the problem. It increases pressure on every company to cut labor faster.
The researchers call this the Red Queen effect:
You run faster and faster just to stay in the same place.
Except the ground beneath you is disappearing.
The warning is no longer theoretical.
Block cut nearly half of its 10,000 employees.
Jack Dorsey said AI made many roles unnecessary and predicted most companies would soon reach the same conclusion.
Salesforce reportedly replaced 4,000 customer support roles with AI.
Researchers also note that around 80% of American workers hold jobs with tasks AI could automate.
They tested multiple policy responses:
Universal basic income. Upskilling. Worker equity. Capital taxes. Bargaining rights.
Their conclusion: most reduce pain, but do not break the cycle.
The only direct fix they identified was a tax on automation itself.
The warning is simple:
Every company that fires a worker to save money may also be firing a customer.
Do it enough times across enough industries, and there may be nobody left to buy what everyone is selling.
