My wife and I recently decided to start a new tradition in our family. When our kids turn 11, we’ll take them on a trip, just the three of us, to spend a ton of quality time together. My oldest turned 11 in February. He wanted to go to a Red Wings game in Detroit for his special trip.
We left for Detroit yesterday morning. We drove because road trips are the best. We stopped for breakfast and got him pancakes. We played games in the car, chatted, listened to sports radio, and jammed to some tunes. We stopped at a gas station and let him pick whatever he wanted for a snack and a drink. We had a nice lunch in Ann Arbor, checked into a pretty sweet hotel, and he was bouncing off the walls with excitement. He thanked us with a huge smile on his face the entire day. We got dressed for the Wings game and Ubered to a cool pre-game restaurant for some wings. It was packed with fans.
We got to Little Caesars Arena and he was in awe. We headed straight to the team store, where we bought him Al the Octopus. He’d been talking about wanting one for months. We walked around the stadium and finally got to our seats. The Wings went up 3-1 in the first, and we cheered our asses off all game. We even had a special message for him on the big screen. The Wings ended up losing in overtime, but his surprises weren’t done yet. DeBrincat put us on a list, and we headed down to meet him after the game. Caleb had no idea and was shocked when he saw him. We chatted a bit, and he signed some cards we brought. Then the legendary Red Wings admin showed up with a gift: some Red Wings swag, including a Mo Seider jersey!! He was smiling the whole time.
Then we walked back to the hotel in the cold because… core memories 😂
We DoorDashed his favorite food and chatted until we all fell asleep.
Today we’ll be taking a tour of The Big House in Ann Arbor and then heading home.
I believe these moments are so important for kids. It isn’t about the “big stuff,” though. He would’ve been just as happy if we’d driven around where we live, checking out his favorite spots. It’s about the quality time and making memories. We try to be intentional about spending some quality time with each kid every day, but we love the idea of these trips when they turn 11.
Being a husband and father is the greatest honor of my life, and I thank God every single day for the blessing of my family. ❤️
