Today, several types of drug therapies are used to treat #KidneyCancer, including immunotherapy, which helps the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells, and targeted therapies, which block specific pathways tumors use to grow. In many cases, doctors now use combinations of these treatments to improve outcomes. Understanding the different therapy options can help patients have more informed conversations with their care team about what approach may be right for them. For more information about kidney cancer treatments, visit our Patient Resource Center: patients.kidneycan.org #AcceleratingCures #KidneyCancerAwarenessMonth #KnowledgeIsPower

Progress in rare kidney cancer subtypes depends on collaboration. This month, we’re highlighting the work of the tRCC Project, which is advancing research for translocation renal cell carcinoma (tRCC) by building a comprehensive dataset that combines clinical information, genomic sequencing, and patient-reported experience. For rare cancers like tRCC, every data point matters. Learn more about the project and participation opportunities at trccproject.org #AcceleratingCures #KidneyCancerAwarenessMonth #BetterTogether

Understanding what tests were done, what the results mean, and how the cancer is staged can help you feel more confident when discussing next steps with your care team. Asking clear questions about diagnosis, staging, and additional testing can also help ensure you have the information you need to make informed decisions. For more resources to help guide these conversations, visit our Patient Resource Center at patients.kidneycan.org #AcceleratingCures #KidneyCancerAwarenessMonth #KnowledgeisPower

More than half of #KidneyCancer diagnoses happen incidentally, when imaging tests such as a CT scan, MRI, or ultrasound are performed for an unrelated health concern. These scans allow doctors to see the kidneys and identify tumors that might not yet be causing symptoms. Understanding the tests used to diagnose kidney cancer can help patients feel more prepared and informed when discussing results and next steps with their care team. To learn more about diagnosis and testing, visit KidneyCAN’s Patient Resource Center at patients.kidneycan.org #AcceleratingCures #KidneyCancerAwarenessMonth #KnowledgeisPower

Many people with #KidneyCancer don’t experience symptoms right away. In fact, many tumors are discovered incidentally during imaging for an unrelated health issue. When symptoms do occur, they can include blood in the urine, persistent pain in the side or lower back, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss. These symptoms can also be caused by many other conditions, but they should never be ignored. If something doesn’t feel right, talk with your healthcare provider. For more information about kidney cancer symptoms and diagnosis, visit KidneyCAN’s Patient Resource Center at patients.kidneycan.org #AcceleratingCures #KidneyCancerAwarenessMonth #KnowledgeisPower

#KidneyCancer can be difficult to detect because many people have few or no symptoms in its early stages. When symptoms do appear, they can sometimes be mistaken for other, less serious conditions. Understanding what to watch for and how kidney cancer is diagnosed can help people seek care sooner and ask the right questions. Follow along this week as we take a closer look at the signs, tests, and conversations that can lead to earlier answers. #AcceleratingCures #KidneyCancerAwarenessMonth #KnowledgeisPower

As we wrap up our spring advocacy meetings, we want to be sure to thank our sponsors. This very important work would not be possible without their support. Their partnership helps bring patients, caregivers, clinicians, and advocates to Capitol Hill to speak directly with lawmakers about the importance of kidney cancer research. We are grateful for their commitment to advancing research, strengthening advocacy, and supporting the kidney cancer community. #AcceleratingCures

#ReedOn3! The McLaughlin family has launched an incredible grassroots fundraiser to support #KidneyCancer research. Inspired by Reed McLaughlin, a devoted father, husband, coach, and loyal supporter of everyone around him, the Reed on 3 campaign is bringing people together to raise awareness and funds for kidney cancer. Their goal is $50,000, and they’re already more than $22,000 of the way there! Help them reach their goal: bit.ly/ReedOn3 #AcceleratingCures

We remember Peter Rooney, a dedicated KidneyCAN advocate whose curiosity, determination, and generosity helped strengthen the kidney cancer community. After his diagnosis, Peter made it his mission to learn everything he could about kidney cancer—asking thoughtful questions about the science, the research, and the treatments that could help patients in the future. That knowledge made him a powerful voice on Capitol Hill, where he worked tirelessly to advocate for research funding. Even while facing the physical challenges of metastatic disease, Peter continued to walk the halls of Congress during Advocacy Days, meeting with lawmakers and sharing the patient perspective. He approached this work with honesty about the realities of treatment and a steady optimism that made him both effective and inspiring. Peter’s advocacy was often a shared effort with his wife, Katharina, who stood beside him throughout the journey. Together they brought grace, purpose, and a deep commitment to helping others.

Today we want to recognize Lisa Lindsey, a dedicated KidneyCAN advocate whose voice and spirit have touched so many in the kidney cancer community. Lisa has spent years lifting others up: sending paintings to fellow patients to bring moments of light during difficult days, organizing kidney cancer awareness events, and sharing her story to help others feel less alone. A nurse by training, she has always found ways to care for others, even organizing knitting and crochet projects to support families in her hospital’s NICU. During our Faces of Kidney Cancer campaign, Lisa chose not only to share her own story, but to highlight the nurses who cared for her, submitting photos with them to honor their role in her journey. That’s who Lisa is: someone who always made sure others were seen, appreciated, and supported. One of the quotes she shared with us captures her outlook perfectly: “I won’t allow cancer to win. I will be traveling too fast… enjoying each moment of the beautiful life I have been given.” — Lisa Lindsey We are grateful for Lisa, her advocacy, and the joy she has brought to so many people in this community.
