Joseph and the Egyptian Bride
Joseph rose from prison to second-in-command in Egypt after interpreting Pharaoh’s dreams. Pharaoh gave him Asenath, daughter of a pagan priest of On, as his wife. She bore him two sons: Manasseh (“God has made me forget my troubles”) and Ephraim (“God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction”).
Even when we think we’re in control and making our own decisions, God had already pre-planned every step of this story. What looked like a random political marriage was part of His sovereign design all along.
Later, Jacob adopted the boys as his own, making them full tribes in Israel and giving Joseph a double portion.
“Then Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife.” (Genesis 41:45)
