When a tornado hit Ashley Bourgeois Miller’s West Bank neighborhood in December 2022, it knocked out power and threw her family’s plans into chaos. Just hours later, her water broke. Navigating storm-damaged streets, Ashley and her husband headed straight to @EJHospital, where a trusted care team guided them through an unexpected delivery. A gunshot wound can change everything in an instant—but for many survivors, the hardest part begins after they leave the hospital. At @UMCNO, the Violence Intervention Program was built to support patients through that next phase—helping survivors navigate safety concerns, emotional trauma, and the real-life challenges that can follow a violent injury. Through a fully integrated, multidisciplinary approach led by emergency medicine physician Annelies DeWulf, MD, with collaboration from trauma surgeon Alison Smith, MD, the program goes beyond treating injuries. It focuses on prevention, recovery, and giving patients the support they need to move forward safely and confidently. For nearly a year, Katric Jones endured chronic pain, UTIs, and frustration as doctor after doctor overlooked her symptoms. That changed the moment she met Arelis Bruno, MD, an OB-GYN with Women’s Health Services at @TouroInfirmary. Dr. Bruno listened closely, took Katric’s concerns seriously, and discovered the real cause of her pain — a large fibroid attached to her bladder. To remove the fibroid, Dr. Bruno referred Katric to Pui Cheng, MD, a gynecologic oncologist at Touro specializing in complex pelvic surgery. Dr. Cheng performed a robotic-assisted hysterectomy, removing multiple fibroids that had completely distorted Katric’s normal pelvic anatomy. The surgery was a success and almost immediately, Katric felt like she had her life back. Today, she’s pain-free and embracing a future filled with movement, travel, and purpose.
