We give a lot of tours here at #mistatecapitol, but in December our education staff got the chance to take their own field trip to the #MIHistoryCenter! Thanks to our docents Dick & Gary who led us through the fascinating exhibits and shared their wealth of knowledge!

In October, #mistatecapitol staff filmed an oral history with Capitol Historian Kerry Chartkoff, key to projects like the award-winning restoration, Save the Flags, portrait preservation, and Capitol Square restoration. #MichiganStateCapitol #CapitolHistorian

Artists in the 1880s used many different techniques to decorate #mistatecapitol, including gilding which you can see in this clip filmed during the 1987-1992 restoration. Learn more about these methods & the artists who used them in our new exhibit! mscexhibits.org

Capitol Square is in full bloom! The carpet beds along the central walkway are planted in a precise pattern to create decorative designs as they grow. This year’s pattern is inspired by the border of interlocking circles under the Capitol’s grand stairs.

Summer brings the start of vacation season in Michigan! In 1944 travelers could have picked up this book in the Michigan Tourist Council office on the ground floor of the Capitol. Many of the sites described here are still popular attractions today!

CMU's North American Indigenous Summer Enrichment Camp visited the Clarke to learn about the Civil War w/ @cmichCLASS prof Dr Michelle Cassidy! Students studied maps, diaries, & medals while learning about MI's Company K & more. It was great to welcome NAISEC! @CMUIndigenous

The Capitol’s exterior and grounds have undergone many subtle & not-so-subtle changes. In this 1940s photo we can see the original lanterns on the east steps have been replaced with glass globes, and a dense line of shrubs have been planted along the wall. What else can you see?

A landmark known for bringing residents and travelers together, the Lansing train station has served as a community focused space since its origins as a transportation hub. Now, the space houses both Starbucks and Bobcat Bonnie's maintaining its impactful past.
