Under the new trust account authorization requirement, licensees who operate a trust account must provide an irrevocable authorization to the Law Society, which directs their financial institution to release trust account records to the Law Society, upon request. The requirement is being implemented in two stages: •New trust accounts: Beginning May 1, 2026, licensees must provide the authorization within 30 days of opening a trust account. •Existing trust accounts: Authorizations for existing trust accounts must be provided by March 31, 2027. In April, licensees whose licences have been administratively suspended for more than three years will have their licence revoked. As the process requires, an Order for revocation will be made. Those licensees who are affected by the Order will be notified via LSO Connects, and their licences will be revoked at 5 p.m. on the day that the notice has been served. Anyone whose licence is currently administratively suspended and wishes to maintain their licence to practise law or provide legal services should contact us to resolve the issue: LawSociety@LSO.ca By-law 8 requires licensees to notify the Law Society immediately after any change in contact information.
