New UK screen time rules just dropped — and they’re stricter than most parents expected.
From 27 March 2026, England says: zero solo screens for under-2s (except quick video calls with family), and max one hour a day for 2–5 year olds — no screens at meals or the hour before bed. Co-view everything, stick to slow-paced content, and ditch fast social-media clips and AI toys completely.
The science is sobering: toddlers’ brains process info up to 10 times slower than adults. Fast-paced screens push them into fight-or-flight mode — racing heart, surging energy — while they’re sitting still. Researchers at the University of East London say this mismatch can wire kids for more tantrums and emotional struggles later. Using screens to calm meltdowns? It often backfires long-term.
As a parent, it’s brutal — we all know that explosion the second you take the tablet away.
But this feels like evidence finally catching up with what our gut has been telling us.
How are you handling screens with little ones — strict limits, co-viewing, or mostly winging it?

This is absolutely fascinating. In 1977, a 109 year old woman born in 1868 is interviewed about her life.
When asked whether she has ever been on an airplane, she says never, but that she might now because she is “more venturesome.”
When asked about the biggest change she has seen, she replies:
“Everything. Nothing is the same.”
Living from the horse and buggy days to the jet age in one lifetime.
I also love the way she commands the English language. It feels like an art form that has been lost over time.

@narrenhut we regularly underestimate how much whimsy generations in the distant past used to have. I mean, look at this meme from the 1920's:

Back in the World Cup Finals of 1974, the opening ceremony saw each nation come out of collapsing giant footballs in their national dress.
Here is Scotland!

Whenever I see a River Plate video knocking about it always reminds me of this one from them a few years ago. Easily one of the best chants in football

The U.S. Department of the Treasury in 1959. At the height of U.S.–Soviet tensions, the government wanted to encourage ordinary families (especially kids) to buy U.S. Savings Bonds.
Bonds were marketed as a patriotic way to help finance the country and “save America from communist rule.” The Treasury chose Father Knows Best because the show was the gold standard for wholesome, idealized American family life, perfect for making the message feel relatable and non-preachy.
It was distributed free to schools, churches, civic groups, and community organizations for screenings (not TV airings).
The goal was to reach millions of young people through the familiar Anderson family.
