Herons in depressing confluences. Confluences are traditionally seen as the most sacred parts of a river. Herons love to fish at confluences, but there’s something quite melancholy about seeing them in places that are ecologically damaged. Canoeing down the Roding yesterday, I saw one heron in the confluence with the Cran Brook, somehow unperturbed by the 750,000,000 litres of raw sewage a year it’s standing in. I then saw another heron in the gloomy and forbidding confluence of the Loxford Water, where the river has been forced into a deathly concrete tunnel to build a railway overhead.

HUDDERSFIELD GROOMING GANG JAILED FOR CHILD S*XUAL EXPLOITATION Five men who sexually exploited vulnerable young girls in Huddersfield have been jailed for a combined total of 45 years, following the latest convictions under West Yorkshire Police’s long‑running Operation Tendersea. Their sentencing brings the overall total to 312 years of imprisonment handed down across five major trials linked to the investigation. Judge Geoffrey Marson QC, speaking at Leeds Crown Court, condemned the men’s actions as “vile and wicked”, saying the treatment of the girls “defies understanding”. He noted that none of the defendants had shown any remorse. One 32‑year‑old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, received a 14‑year sentence for raping a 12‑year‑old girl, taking her virginity and leaving her bleeding in a park. He also carried out what the judge described as a “campaign of rape” against another teenage girl, repeatedly abusing her in a Huddersfield park and using sleeping pills to overpower her. The court heard how the victims—many of them extremely vulnerable—were groomed, given drugs and alcohol, and passed between groups of men who pretended to show affection while exploiting them for sexual gratification. Judge Marson said the girls were manipulated into believing they were cared for, when in reality they were being targeted by predatory offenders. He described one case in which a terrified 12‑year‑old was relentlessly pursued. Men repeatedly called her carers demanding access to her, even after she was moved to another city for her safety. She feared she would be killed if her phone details were handed to police. Umar Zaman, 31, and Samuel Fikru, 32, both of William Street, Huddersfield, were each sentenced to eight years after being convicted of two counts of rape. Zaman has absconded and is believed to be in Pakistan. Another 32‑year‑old man was jailed for eight years for a single count of rape, and a 38‑year‑old man received seven years for attempted rape. Their identities are also protected for legal reasons. A sixth defendant, Banaris Hussain, 36, also of William Street, was convicted of one count of rape and is due to be sentenced on Monday.

An unprovoked assault with a knife in Chatham has resulted in a man being jailed for attempted murder. Ray Chirisa has been sentenced to 23 years in prison with a further five years on licence following the incident in The Brook on 28 October 2024. At around 8pm that evening, Chirisa approached a man he did not know and, following a brief conversation, stabbed him multiple times. The victim fell to the ground and the assault continued until the victim, who had sought to deflect the knife using his arms, fled to the safety of a nearby shop. Officers attended the area where they promptly arrested Chirisa. Subsequent CCTV enquiries led investigators to recover a knife with a 16cm blade from a bin in the town centre. Chirisa, of Hermitage Lane, Maidstone was later charged with attempted murder and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. The 34-year-old denied the charges during a trial and was found guilty on both counts. Chirisa was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday 15 May 2026.

Two Women Targeted In Horrifying Sex Attacks Just Days Apart, Police Release Images Of Suspects. Police are hunting two men over separate sexual assaults on women in Manchester and Colchester in a shocking double appeal that has raised fresh fears for public safety. The first incident happened in broad daylight inside a popular TK Maxx store, while the second took place at night on a quiet residential pathway, both leaving victims terrified and officers desperate for information. In the Manchester case, Greater Manchester Police say a lone woman was followed through the aisles of the TK Maxx at Manchester Fort in Cheetham Hill at around 4:33pm on Saturday, May 9. A man entered the store shortly before her and began tailing her closely as she made her way to the homeware section, allegedly engaging in sexually inappropriate behaviour before carrying out a sexual assault.When the woman called out for security, the suspect fled the store immediately. Officers are now making a plea for the victim herself to come forward, while also urging anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV images to contact them. They believe he may be able to assist with their enquiries. He is described as a black male wearing a black headscarf, headphones, a light brown jacket with a black check pattern, light blue jeans and black trainers. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting log 1420 of 09/05/2026. Just five days earlier, on Monday, May 4, a woman was subjected to a serious sexual assault in the Greenstead area of Colchester, Essex. Essex Police say the attack happened at about 11pm on a footpath between The Chase and Stanley Wooster Way. She was sexually assaulted before the suspect made off. Detectives have released clear CCTV footage of a man they urgently want to speak to. He is described as a black male with short black hair, wearing a beige or brown plaid long-sleeve shirt and dark trousers at the time. Information can be submitted via the Major Incident Public Portal, reference 4201020126R94-PO1 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The force is also appealing for a taxi driver who may have dropped the victim near Hawthorn Avenue that evening, and for any local CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage from the Greenstead estate between 7pm and 11:30pm. Essex Police have confirmed the Colchester victim is being supported by specialist officers. Greater Manchester Police continue to appeal for the Manchester victim to come forward so she can receive support. Police say every possible line of enquiry is being followed. Women are being urged to remain vigilant when out alone, particularly in quieter locations after dark.
