River guardians do not want bribes that allow Thames Water to keep breaking the law. We want one simple thing: for Thames Water to put spades in the ground & fix every single illegal outfall within the next 5-10 years. A little story to illustrate: 5 years ago I found an illegal outfall spewing raw sewage (with visible turds) into the Aldersbrook (a tributary of the Roding). The EA refused to prosecute, but I created so much fuss locally about it that eventually I got a visit from Richard Aylard, Thames Water’s ‘Sustainability Director’ who had an unflattering appearance in the recent ‘Dirty Business’ programme. Instead of setting forth a timetable to fix the outfall, Aylard offered the River Roding Trust (the entirely volunteer run charity I founded) £50,000 for “river restoration”. I refused this offer, saying there was no point restoring a brook that still had raw shit going into it. I continued campaigning for another three years: taking numerous journalists to the outfall, getting Thames Water hauled before the local council scrutiny committee & relentlessly calling them out on social media. Eventually, after 4 years, Thames spent £1 million fixing the outfall & the brook is now clean for the first time in decades. I have no doubt that if I hadn’t discovered the outfall in the first place, or if I had taken the £50,000, the outfall would still be putting raw turds into the Aldersbrook, a stone’s throw from Ilford town centre. It’s obvious for Thames that’s it cheaper to pay their critics to keep quiet than to do the work needed to fix the problem, but this is not what our rivers need.

Thame Water offers to pay £25 million to environment charities and local community groups, but only if Ofwat allow TW to scrap their "outcome delivery incentives", over the next 5 years. In other words allow us to wilfully, deliberately, knowingly break the law for the next 5 years and we'll bug eNGOs a £25 million bribe, simply to shut them up. But would any of the eNGOs accept TW's blood money? I know at least one that would rip their arms off. londonstockexchange.com/news-article/A…

Huge moment from @GeorgeMonbiot on #BBCQT. Britain and the US overthrew Iran’s elected leader Mohammad Mossadegh in 1953 after he nationalised oil. The Shah followed. Then the 1979 revolution. Decades later the consequences are still unfolding. That’s imperial blowback. Britain defended corporate oil interests abroad and yet at home we let our own resources flow into the global market instead of protecting national wealth. History has consequences. #IranWar

AOC: He impulsively went in on Venezuela. He impulsively went in on Iran. It led to increased global instability everywhere he goes. And every time he’s done that, it has been consistent with a spike or a revelation in what is happening with the Epstein files. I think that he feels existentially tied to it.  And I actually think that it is one reason that he must be removed from office, because if the Epstein files have such a hold on President Trump and this administration that they are willing to plunge us and risk world war in order to save themselves politically, that is the definition of someone who cannot make objective decisions for the American people.

I'm writing a book about @Nigel_Farage for @headlinepg. Funnily enough, some of his old associates are blanking me. Is it because after I reported on the killing of a Polish man in Essex in 2016, he said that I had caused him "more misery than any other in 25 years in politics"? So I'm asking the Great British public to lend me a hand because NF is seeking to be our lord and master. Were you at school with NF? Worked with him in the City when he was a tin trader? Met him through politics? Did you drive the pink Cadillac hired by Nathan Gill who last year got ten years for taking bribes from a Russian spy? Do get in touch: johnsweeney.co.uk

The day after I posted on Twitter these steps the Mayor could take to act on the sewage crisis, @ZackPolanski very kindly put the first one on the list to the Deputy London Mayor for the Environment @metecoban92. I’m grateful that Mete has agreed to consider a comprehensive London-wide sewage survey to find & quantify all of the illegal sewage outlets in the capital, using the methodology I established this year in a project on the River Roding. It is wild that that the Environment Agency does not have this crucial information, but the Mayor has the power to authorise & fund this crucial first step to halting the sewage crisis in London.
Paul Powlesland@paulpowlesland

It’s time for the Mayor to start taking action, rather than just talking about sewage. Here are the things he could do *right now* that are fully within his legal powers & funding abilities: 1. Commission a sewage survey to find, test & quantify every single illegal sewage outlet in London, as currently no one knows where all the sewage is coming from. The groundbreaking survey I carried out to find all the sewage on lower Roding this summer cost less than £50k, so London-wide this step should cost less than £1 million. 2. Call Thames Water, the EA, local councils & river guardians in to agree a detailed, staged & costed plan to fix every single illegal sewage outlet in London within 5 years. 3. If Thames Water refuse to play ball, demand that the EA prosecute every illegal sewage spill in the London area. If they refuse to do so, set up and fund a private prosecution office to prosecute every illegal sewage spill in the London area to the maximum extent of the law. As costs are recoverable if Thames Water are found guilty (which they invariably will be), this should become self funding. The Mayor could authorise these steps tomorrow and have significantly reduced sewage pollution in London by the time of the next mayoral election. Will he act, rather than just talk?

This is racism, pure and simple. It’s also a test. The UK press needs to describe it for exactly what it is: that Reform’s candidate made a racist and inflammatory losing statement

"Dirty Business creator on raw sewage scandal: ‘This is the worst possible situation we’ll accept without starting a revolution’." Maybe that's what it's going to take. One way or another govt is going to have to take its head out of the toilet and confront the ownership and financing of the water industry. There is no other option. independent.co.uk/arts-entertain…

This morning I went on GB News to call out Nigel Farage & Matt Godwin as sore losers & to celebrate the fact that the Green Party is now the main political party with a positive vision for Britain & the only real alternative to the politically & morally bankrupt Labour Party. In my rucksack at the studio, I had a pair of waders & some black bags to head straight to one of the most rubbish strewn rivers in London to start cleaning it up with people from all different parts of the local community over the next few days. This to me is what the Greens are all about: a rejection of the politics of division & hate, combined with a vision & action to make this country a better place.

BREAKING: This national security assessment, now being broadcast for the first time after the Government tried to hush it up, makes clear what many have sensed for some time: #climate - and #nature - breakdown presents serious and escalating risks to #UK homes, food systems, health, public services, national security and the wider economy.

Bucket: £10 Waders: £30 Measuring jug: 90p Ammonia tester: £100 Actually going out to check a sewage outfall that illegally discharges 750,000,000 million litres of sewage every year? Priceless. There are some things a government regulator with a budget of £189,000,000 & 12,000 staff can’t do. For everything else, there’s volunteer river guardians.
