After years of false claims, President Muizzu has now confirmed there are no “serious concerns” with the bilateral agreements between Maldives and India. He won the 2023 presidential election on the back of a campaign that claimed these agreements threatened our sovereignty and territorial integrity. That narrative has now collapsed under his own words. It spread fear, broke trust, and damaged Maldives' reputation globally. The people of Maldives and India deserve an apology and a serious accounting for the harm caused.

On #WorldPressFreedomDay I convey my greetings and best wishes to journalists across the Maldives. The role played by a free and independent press as guardians of democracy cannot be overstated. To prevent a reversal of our democratic gains, Maldives needs its journalists to be even more fearless in the pursuit of the truth - now more than ever.

In solidarity with the courageous journalists and media outlets on #WorldPressFreedomDay. Concerns remain over the government’s pervasive media control, intimidation of journalists, and lack of transparency—particularly its failure to respond to RTI requests. A free press is the cornerstone of a functional democracy and essential for an accountable government.

Press Statement: MDP Condemns President Muizzu’s Attempts to Undermine the Constitution and Subvert Judicial Independence

اِنَّا لِلّٰهِ وَاِنَّااِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُوْنَ ރާއްޖޭގެ މިއުޒިކް އިންޑަސްޓްރީއަށް ގިނަގުނަ ހިދުމަތްތަކެއް ކޮށްދެއްވާފައިވާ ހުނަރުވެރި މިއުޒިޝަން މެޒޯ މުހައްމަދު ނިޔާވުމުގެ ހިތާމައިގައި ބައިވެރިވެ އާއިލާއަށް ކެތްތެރިކަން ދެއްވުމަށް އެދި ދުއާކުރަން. މެޒޯއަކީ ރާއްޖޭގެ އިސްލާހީ ހަރަކާތުގައި އަގުހުރި ހިދުމަތްތަކެއް ކޮށްދެއްވި މުހިންމު ބައިވެރިއެއް. މަރުހޫމް މެޒޯ މުހައްމަދުއަށް ހެޔޮ ރަޙުމަތް ލައްވައި ސުވަރުގޭގެ އެންމެ މަތީ ދަރަޖަ މިންވަރު ކުރައްވާށި.
