Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Michael DeSombre was in Wellington this week, advancing the U.S.-New Zealand partnership across security, economic growth, and regional stability.
From high-level meetings at the Beehive with Foreign Minister Winston Peters, Defense and Space Minister Chris Penk, and Resources Minister Shane Jones, to engagement with MFAT leadership and New Zealand’s top innovators, the visit highlights the depth of our cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.
Together, we’re strengthening shared security, driving innovation and trade, and reinforcing the values that underpin a safer, stronger, and more prosperous future.🇺🇸🇳🇿

It was a pleasure to host US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Michael G. DeSombre at Parliament yesterday where he joined representatives from the governments of Australia, the Republic of Korea and Japan for a roundtable on critical minerals.
New Zealand could be much wealthier if we tap into the critical minerals we know are beneath our feet.
Yesterday’s meeting brought together scientists, explorers and miners to talk about New Zealand’s critical minerals potential and projects already under way. There is a will on New Zealand’s side to help ensure that the world has a secure supply chain for critical minerals, which everyone agrees are necessary for our modern world to progress.

Kerikeri, another public meeting, 200+, standing room only. 40 minute speech and lots of questions.
People are keen to know how will the growth of our economy take place with crippling energy costs.
I assured them that NZ 1st has the plan to expand supply and rid ourselves of monopoly behaviour amongst the Gentailers.
I repeated that gas and domestic coal are a part of the mix. I was told that the Crown should use its shareholding power to force more investment.
There is no appetite for Runanga to halt progress and pretend they have veto power. The Otago goldmine saga with Ngai Tahu was mentioned as a case of statutory over reach.
Kiwi investors and job seekers should not be denied a development dividend by green elitism and brown shake down.
Many in the audience are not convinced that the Indian Trade deal will bring benefits.
They fear slave labour exploitation will worsen in areas such as the Kiwi fruit industry.
This is an area which we will need to tackle with new anti corruption powers post election.
The applause was strong for ensuring that all local government councils limit voting power to elected members.
There is a need for rationalising our local government sector. The changes should be driven by ratepayers.
I plan to deliver another thirty five speeches at public venues, 2026.
This enables direct feedback in terms of our policy delivery. It also provides for fresh insights related to our coalition priorities.
Everyone wants to see a greater focus on growth. Common sense Kiwis know we need more practical results.
Greater focus on outcomes rather than process and petty rules that stifle affordable and timely delivery..

Over the past 6 days I have been busy delivering a round of speeches.
Dargaville, 200+, Auckland audiences 300 +, smaller groups of accountants and business professionals in Queenstown.
Each event differs but the underlying messages are the same.
Grow baby grow!
We are still emerging from the Labour fiscal hangover.
We are facing more uncertainty but we must not repeat the errors of Covid. Managing the fuel quagmire does not mean writing out random cheques. Jacinda spent all the money.
The GDP turn around period has been protracted by events beyond our control. USA tarriffs, geo political turmoil in the Middle East, threats of inflation and energy driven uncertainty in our export markets.
I was asked to offer a view about how firms should respond to the current situation. Cash flow is King, treasure your customers and don’t undervalue your staff.
Our overall direction of travel as a nation must be for growth. We cannot tax our way out of debt, we cannot cut our way out of pessimism, we must develop.
How to achieve this outcome? The responses from the crowd are clear. No more indiscriminate increases in government costs and charges.
Rather than charge more, do less was the message from many speakers. Give more certainty through simplifying statutory processes. Open up DOC to development.
We must wean ourselves off the Green/Labour syndrome of welfarism. More family responsibility, no more grievance mentality.
Cease climate change wailing. Respond with practical and affordable steps such as flood mitigation.
Disarm climate fanatics and safeguard our firms from climate zealotry. NZ core resilence and economic security must not be dwarfed by IPCC groupies.
I was challenged about promoting growth but not buying into blockchain immigration. Ah folks, mass immigration has not made us wealthier or boosted Kiwi productivity.
The vast majority of people said they agree with me in terms of the dangers of immigration replacement agendas.
The migrant legal activists that whinge about citizenship tests are dangerous. They are using us as a base to flip over to Aus.
After the election there will be a drive to rid ourselves of aliens who refuse to abide by legal obligations.
Look no further than the foreign corruption in the Kiwi fruit sector. Asset owners who acquiesce in ignorance are culpable.
All audiences support my pledge to deal to the Nga Puhi claim post election in the first 100 days. No more wasting taxpayer money on fanciful notions such as parallel sovereignty. Such issues belong in a parallel universe!
Mineral extraction and accelerated energy growth is critical to our national development. I promoted the idea of energy zones without RMA consents.
I was asked if special economic zones were a likely outcome post election 2026. Obviously that matter depends on the results of November 07.
The fuel security response is uppermost for many firms across our regions. We have invested the time and energy in demand restraint rules.
Labour and their klingons try to stir and generate alarmism. They are failing.
We are focused on supply and will only use regulation to manage fuel allocation when absolutely necessary.
There were no questions about seasonal issues such as recreational fisheries and media flare ups.
It is evident that economic opportunity, household budgets and political coherence are important.
The next speech is at Kerikeri - 2pm, Sunday 10 May 2026.
