Have you ever wondered why we reprofile peat hags? Bare peat is easily eroded by water💦 and wind, causing the loss of valuable carbon. Reprofiling encourages the growth of vegetation, protecting #peatland habitats and reducing sediment washing into streams and reservoirs😃

Great to see #sphagnum establishing on coir netting and logs😃These little beauties are ecosystem engineers, creating the wet, acidic conditions needed for #peat formation on the hills. Not only do they benefit the climate, they can also reduce flooding and wildfire risk 💦🔥

The joy of pulling out sitka spruce saplings 😂🌲 These occasionally pop up on our peat restoration sites and can be damaging to these habitats. Over time, they can dry out the peat and act as a perch for predators of ground-nesting birds 🐦

Just look at those colours 😍 It was a misty start on the hills today, but if you look down there is plenty of brightness to be found. Lichens and #Sphagnum mosses are particularly vibrant in the winter, making up for the lack of flowers 😊

Happy Sphagnum Day❤️to all the bog lovers out there 😀 These amazing mosses are ecosystem engineers, creating the wet conditions they thrive in. They absorb lots of water and acidify their surroundings, slowing the decomposition of plants, leading to the formation of #peat ❤️

Having a pair of fluffy foot warmers (look closely 👀🐶) is essential when working on the hills in winter ❄️ We've started work on a new site, reprofiling peat hags so they can revegetate and keep that carbon locked away 😀

Our peatland restoration work is made considerably easier by using our 'magic hammer' 😁🔨 If you look closely, you can see that the stakes are driven into the ground with no effort at all!

Our willow sediment trap has worked really well, trapping stones washed downslope during heavy rainfall 💦 We're so pleased with it that we've built several more, to help slow the flow of water and revegetate the hillside ☺️
