@MargueriteApp15 I considered adding it to my post but I hope this one is temporary! Even now a lot of students are starting to claim it’s ‘dead’. What a relief. I even have sixth formers who can’t help but snigger when I say 67. Which for some reason I find myself saying all the time! 😂

@mathsjem And not quite the same, but now avoid any reference to the numbers 6 and 7! Check no calculations equal 67 or that 6 and 7 are not consecutive digits in the trail of decimal places a calculator gives or that you don’t say you have 6-7 minutes to complete this task!

@mathsjem @missradders OCR have just posted this about Bounds. They are burying a massive inconsistency! It follows a long complaint that we have had with them about the topic that eventually went to Ofqual. Ofqual upheld the complaint There is still an issue with June 2025. DM for more info.

Been tasked with organising intervention for KS3 maths. Currently model: students taken out of some lessons over 8 weeks to do mathletics with non-specialists. Not my idea and I have no input on that. Will have input next year but need some ideas? @mathsjem

@D_Lynch_94 @missradders Here’s the treasure hunt files originally shared by Hannah: dropbox.com/scl/fo/oavytt2… We don’t use any other resources other than posters. We get puzzle ideas from all over the place! Finding suitable puzzles is always the trickiest bit.

@missradders We are always delighted when we see students attempting to solve the daily puzzle as soon as they arrive at school, and students crowded around the maths office at break eagerly discussing their ideas. We love Maths Week! 4/4

The treasure hunt is always a highlight (thanks to @missradders for sharing this years ago!). A great way for students to get to know teachers around the school. Always gets high engagement from all year groups. They love it! 3/4

📣 Another #mathsconf40 workshop announcement! ✨ Challenging and Engaging Key Stage 3 Mathematicians by Jo Morgan @mathsjem Recent reports suggest that some talented mathematicians lose interest in maths at Key Stage 3, noting that “higher-attaining students are too often deprived of novelty, challenge, and stretch.” In this workshop, we’ll explore how to keep mathematically capable students engaged and motivated. Drawing on real classroom practice, we’ll share strategies for curriculum design, lesson planning, and assessment that provide meaningful challenge without sacrificing accessibility. ✨ What you’ll take away: ✅ Approaches to provide challenge for higher-attaining KS3 students ✅ Examples of curriculum, lesson, and assessment design ✅ Strategies to maintain engagement and motivation ✅ Practical ideas to stretch students while supporting their understanding Leave inspired with actionable ideas to ensure all your KS3 mathematicians remain curious, challenged, and engaged. This is the start of the series for A-level Maths Revision. Hopefully you'll be able to use some of these questions with your own students. Part 1: Quadratics and Discriminant. Bedrock of A-level Maths. Enjoy! #alevelmaths @mathsjem (I'm sure you'll like q3!)

@shastonchick We make our own topic tests using questions from a range of sources. I'm not sure about ready-made topic tests. I guess a lot of school use the tests that accompany their SoW e.g. White Rose. AQA's GCSE topic tests are great and the Foundation ones might be suitable for KS3.

The days of GCSE pupils memorising equations and formulae from memory are now officially over. Schools minister Georgia Gould has written to Ofqual to say that "for the lifetime of the current GCSE specifications in these subjects, students should not be required to memorise formulae and equations for assessment purposes." Dumbing down or common sense?
