@adamboxer1 I've bitten many a silver bullet over the years. Silver bullets = fools gold. Culture is hard work. Strategy is hard work. Classrooms are highly complex places, even if you have been at school long enough for all kids to buy in and even if you have the best techniques going.

I know i shouldn't be surprised any more, but the phenomenon of non-school-leaders talking about magic wand stuff that school leaders should do will never cease to amaze me

@dylanwiliam @tes Could you point me to any lesson plans that a skillful teacher could use in a mixed-ability 9th-grade algebra class that would allow high-achievers to cover/master the whole course while addressing the needs of kids who struggle to perform basic arithmetic operations? 1/2

I'm fine with government not requiring equation memorisation but I'd prefer it if they criminalised formula triangles Much bigger fish that needs frying

Poll: QLA spreadsheets for Maths Mocks - data entered by teachers. Worth the time and effort?

@FantasticMaths @ShakinthatChalk @AQA Agree- the follow up often fizzles. Sometimes, before the follow up is 'completed' the next set of mocks arrives, abruptly halting the previous follow up. You end up repeating it without enough tome to complete it, rendering both phases Sisyphean. Then y10 mocks happen...

@MathsWebb @ShakinthatChalk @AQA The it depends, depends on there being good reasons, and that there is a high impact follow up. If there isn’t both of these it should not be mandatory.

@FantasticMaths @ShakinthatChalk @AQA That's good, but at many schools, it is mandatory for teachers to do the input. Perhaps with good reasons (e.g. accuracy). I do wonder whether it's worth the opportunity cost, and whether the data based strategies yield the desired impact.

@FantasticMaths @ShakinthatChalk @AQA But because or system inertia & a dose of workload martyrdom, we do it the hard way. We have a duty to do better. (Yes, the AI would need to be GDPR compliant).

@FantasticMaths @ShakinthatChalk @AQA In 2026, I find it bonkers that we don't use AI to do the legwork. We could I theory- Get pupils to complete printed QLA Scan & upload to AI which collates clas/dept/MAT QLA and does some analysis. You could even listen to a podcast about your class on the way home.

@SteveMcClean1 @ShakinthatChalk That does sound helpful. My three main concerns with QLA are; 1. A ~3600% increase in data entry workload is a distraction from planning 2. If we hand QLA to students, we have less buy in from them? It undermines their independence 3. Students will over focus on QLA gaps

@MathsWebb @ShakinthatChalk My colleague showed me how to change the settings in Excel (options > advanced) so that the cell moves right instead of down when you press enter. It's a game-changer for entering QLA data as you can turn the pages with your left hand and enter the data with your right.
