What most voted for in Starmer (outside of simply him not being a Tory) was stability and change. The recent gilt market moves suggest this hasn't been delivered.
It's far from the Truss meltdown, but even a 1ppt increase in yields results in ~$2.5bn in additional government debt interest.
If we see a move at the magnitude of what we saw with Truss, the increase in debt interest alone would be comparable to 3.1% of the spend on education in the country.
If Starmer wants to reman in seat, he needs to get the bond market back on his side.
