@killdane1 -letters, the E2 as a potential basis for Thomas was brought up. And since most of these letters were from the 60s and 70s, the earliest Awdry could've made E2 Thomas canon was in the mid-to-late 60s.

I honestly think at some point Wilbert was considering changing Thomas's basis until he constructed his third Thomas model in 1980, fell in love with it and later canonized Thomas as an E2 in 1987.
