20 to 30 percent of all breast tumors are diagnosed between regular screenings. For people at high risk for breast cancer, frequent ultrasound scanning — in addition to regular mammograms — can help detect tumors early. A portable ultrasound scanner developed by researchers in the @cdecoders group led by Prof. @dagdevirencanan could make it easier for breast ultrasounds to be performed more often, either at home or at a doctor’s office. news.mit.edu/2026/portable-…

One week since demo day at HARD MODE; the first Hardware × AI Hackathon at MIT Media Lab. 40+ Teams and 200+ participants building physical AI. One team gave an AI a (human) body. Others went SOFT MODE and used clay as an interface. Media Lab Prof. @rosalindpicard reflects on the origins of her work in wearable sensing and Affective Computing — technology designed to measure and respond to human emotions. In January, Professor Picard was named as a recipient of the 2026 IEEE Medal for Innovations in Healthcare Technology, one of @IEEEorg’s highest honors. Project Iceberg, a research effort led by Media Lab PhD student @ayushchopra96 (@cameraculture), has been selected as a grantee of @GitLab_Found’s AI for Economic Opportunity Fund. Selected from over 800 applicants, this cohort represents organizations using AI to expand economic opportunity in innovative ways. Project Iceberg develops Large Population Models, AI systems designed to simulate how large populations behave and interact. In a recent paper published in @nejm_ai, @patpat_MIT, Shruthi Shekar (@Stanford), and collaborators found that many people — even experts — overtrust AI-generated medical advice, and often can't tell whether advice was written by a doctor or generated by an LLM.
