A new type of artificial muscle is reshaping how robots and wearable devices move. 🤖💡 Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab and Politecnico di Bari have developed electrofluidic fiber muscles — soft, lightweight actuators that generate motion using electrical input, without bulky motors or noisy pumps. A step toward quieter, more compact robotic and assistive systems. (cc: @medialab) media.mit.edu/articles/a-new…

In late October 2025, Tropical Storm Melissa moved through the Caribbean Sea with moderate winds that didn’t get much attention. But on Oct. 25, aided by a patch of warm ocean, the storm rapidly intensified. By the time it made landfall in Jamaica, it was one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record. Ravi Pappu SM ’95, PhD ’01 blames the surprise on our inability to gather high-quality ocean data. news.mit.edu/2026/apeiron-l…

MIT researchers including Prof. @eboyden3, who holds a joint appointment in Media Arts and Sciences (the academic program at the Media Lab) and @mcgovernmit, have developed a technique called “implosion carving.” It allows researchers to imprint features throughout a hydrogel using photopatterning, and then shrink it to about 1/2,000 of its original volume, creating tiny 3D photonic devices with features small enough to channel visible light. The new work builds on “implosion fabrication,” which Prof. Boyden’s lab developed in 2018. news.mit.edu/2026/powerful-…

On April 28, @aha_medialab brought together academics, authors, and entrepreneurs — many of them parents — to explore what it means to come of age in the age of AI, and ask how we can ensure that the first generation growing up with AI thrives. Science is Curiosity on a Mission: It includes all of us who ask "why" and make it our mission to find out. These are the discoveries that move the country forward. The pursuit of ideas that seemed impossible until they weren’t. #CuriosityOnAMission

In @NatureComms, researchers from the Media Lab's Sculpting Evolution research group and collaborators demonstrate the first mouse model of Lyme immunity, effectively blocking the transmission of the Lyme-causing bacteria to uninfected ticks. By engineering mice that not only express antibodies against the pathogen, but pass them along to their offspring, the team is laying the groundwork to actively break the Lyme disease transmission cycle in the wild — while pioneering an entirely new way to fight vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. media.mit.edu/publications/h…

In an interview with @BW, Media Lab Prof. Pattie Maes (@fluidinterfaces) warns that AI assistants may improve performance in the short term while weakening critical thinking over time. To combat this risk, Prof. Maes argues they should not always provide immediate answers. Instead, she suggests, AI should sometimes introduce productive friction — asking questions, prompting reflection, and supporting deeper engagement. The goal is not to replace human judgment, but to design systems that strengthen it. bloomberg.com/news/videos/20…

In Auditing AI, from the @mitpress, Media Lab Prof. @kkarahal, alum J. Nathan Matias, and other members of the The Marquand House Collective provide a roadmap for using AI audits to prevent algorithmic harm in fields ranging from medical care to employment and policing. The book is a first-of-its-kind exploration of why and how to audit artificial intelligence systems. mitpress.mit.edu/9780262051729/…

I'm so proud to share that our foundational paper is officially out in @NatureComms! 🐁🧬 After years of collaborative work, we’ve developed the first mouse model of Lyme immunity that effectively blocks transmission of the bacteria to uninfected ticks. nature.com/articles/s4146…

Another important step in the fight toward eliminating Lyme disease. 🐭🕷️ This paper from my postdoc lab shows progress toward engineering mice so they can no longer transmit the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. By targeting the animal reservoir, this approach could help break the cycle that keeps Lyme circulating in the wild. Paper here: nature.com/articles/s4146… Great to see this work out in @NatureComms. Congrats to @JoannaBuchthal, @kesvelt and the rest of the Mice Against Ticks team.

Grateful to @gabrieldance for taking AI-biorisk seriously. Anthropic and OpenAI are more careful than the rest of society, but the bar is so low it's underground. No laws govern AI, bio regs are full of holes - and the problem extends beyond biothreats. nytimes.com/2026/04/29/us/…

In the United States, tick season runs from April through October. This year, @CDCgov has already issued an early public advisory to guard against ticks, which can carry a range of pathogens, including the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. On @7NEWS, @DavePuglisiTV speaks with Media Lab Prof. @kesvelt and @tufts Prof. @ixodesdammini about Mice Against Ticks, a community-guided project led by Prof. Esvelt and Dr. @JoannaBuchthal that aims to stop Lyme at its source by making white-footed mice immune to the disease. whdh.com/7-investigates…
