MBC deletes controversial coronation scene from #PerfectCrown following historical distortion and Northeast Project backlash. MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama #PerfectCrown has become embroiled in major controversy following accusations of historical distortion and alleged references linked to the Northeast Project, with the broadcaster now deciding to completely remove the ending scene from episode 11 after intense public backlash. According to an MBC official speaking to Korean media outlet The Fact on May 22, the network plans to delete the controversial coronation sequence from episode 11 across VOD and OTT platforms. The official added that the revised version may take several days to reflect on all streaming and broadcast services due to platform-specific modification processes. The controversy intensified after viewers criticized the coronation ceremony scene involving Grand Prince Yi An, played by Byun Woo-seok. During the sequence, subjects were shown shouting “Cheonse” - an expression historically associated with vassal states - instead of “Manse,” which traditionally symbolizes an independent monarch. The issue escalated further after viewers pointed out that Yi An appeared wearing a “Guryumyeonryugwan,” a crown associated with rulers subordinate to imperial China, rather than the “Sibyeonryugwan,” a crown historically worn by sovereign rulers. The scene quickly sparked accusations of distorting Korean history and drew criticism related to the Northeast Project controversy. Viewers argued that the drama inaccurately portrayed Korean royal symbolism and sovereignty, leading to widespread outrage online. In response to the backlash, the production team initially issued a public apology and attempted temporary corrections by muting parts of the audio and modifying subtitles in reruns, VOD releases, and OTT streaming versions. The drama’s lead actor, director, and writer also publicly apologized over the issue. Despite those measures, criticism continued to grow. Many viewers demanded that production funding received from the Korea Creative Content Agency be returned, while others called for the drama itself to be scrapped entirely. MBC has also faced criticism for not releasing a stronger official statement earlier, with some accusing the broadcaster of responding too late after the controversy had already escalated nationwide. Although the network has now decided to fully remove the disputed coronation scene, public backlash remains severe, and attention is focused on whether MBC can successfully address the controversy through further action and accountability.
