It is the same idea as your salary. After rent, food, and fixing your car so you can still get to work, whatever remains is yours to save or spend freely. For a company, it's operating cash flow minus capital expenditure. It is relevant because profits can be dressed up with accounting, but cash is much harder to fake. You can have a very strong revenue growth, but nearly all of it could be credit sales (the same way fashion designers lament that they have money, but a bulk of it is “outside”, so they ask you to borrow them money, i.e., ask for short-term working capital funding). Strong, consistent FCF means real flexibility to pay dividends, cut debt, or weather a downturn, so when assessing a stock, follow the cash, not just the earnings. When I assess a company, I look at it from a "dividend-paying capacity" rather than "dividends". 🎯
