Chapter 49 in SLEEP AND HEALTH ends the new edition of the textbook on an important note that was sorely missing from the previous edition. This new chapter, by Julie Flygare, is focused on "The Rise of Patient Advocacy in teh Sleep Field." The last word in this texbook is given to the voice of the patients. After all, this is why we do what we do. It is important to remember that the patient's voice is an important part of the conversation and can not only help researchers be better researchers and help clinicians be better clinicians, but patient voices can drive the field forward in terms of advocacy, policy, and outreach. Chapter 48 in SLEEP AND HEALTH is an update on the chapter on "SleepHealth as an Issue of Public Safety." By Alexander Wolkow, Laura Barger, and Matt Weaver, this chapter outlines how sleep health is not just an issue of public health but also an issue of public safety. Not only is poor sleep a major factor in car crashes, but many of the safety-sensitive industries we depend on are often chronically set up for worse sleep. And this can have disastrous consequences! Chapter 47 in the new edition of SLEEP AND HEALTH is another new one for this edition. One of the most requested additions since the last publication was a chapter on "Sleep Health in the Primary Care Setting." And this chapter, by Ivan Vargas, Jamie Walker, Mara Egeler, Abigail Vance, Julia Boyle, and Lexi Muench delivers! It addresses this important front line in our ability to identify, diagnose, and treat sleep problems. It also charts a course for future work in this area. Chapter 45 in SLEEP AND HEALTH is another new one for this edition. Along with colleague Amy Athey, I summarized some of our work on "Sleep and Athletes" to describe how sleep health is critical for athletic performance, how not addressing sleep anc ricadian health problems can lead to worse outcomes, and also how to design and implement sleep health promotion programs. We hope that readers will think beyond just athletics when they read this chapter, seeing links with many areas of functioning and getting some good ideas for building sleep and circadian health promotion programs outside of athletics as well. Chapter 44 in SLEEP AND HEALTH is another new chapter, and perhaps one of its most important. Are untreated sleep disorders expensive for us as a society? Is there an economic argument to be made for addressing them? This chapter answers this question and is focused on "Value-Based Sleep and Health: Health Economic Aspects of Insomnia and Obstructive Sleep Apnea." Written by Emerson Wickwire -- the leader in this space -- this chapter outklines the financial argument for making sleep disorders treatment a priority. Chapter 43 in SLEEP AND HEALTH continues the discussion of public policy potential of sleep health by addressing the issue of "Identifying and Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Commercial Vehicle Operators: A Summary of Guidance for Clinicians." Led by one of the leading experts in this area, Indira Gurubhagavatula, with Aesha Jobanputra and Miranda Tan, this chapter lays out not only why commercial drivers on the roads may be at increased risk for sleep apnea, but why screening and treatment is critical, even if they are generally much safer drivers than the typical person behind the wheel. Chapter 42 in SLEEP AND HEALTH is focused on "Sleep and health Equity." This chapter was put together by some of the leading voices in this area, including Judite Blanc, Jao Nunes, Natasha Williams, Rebecca Robbins, Azizi Seixas, and senior author Girardin Jean-Louis. It takes a societal and cultural lens to address the issue of sleep health equity and how sleep health is a universal experience as a biological need, yet we exist in a society that often leads certain populations to achieve less healthy sleep. Chapter 38 in SLEEP AND HEALTH was led by Teresa Arora and addresses the often overlooked problem of "Sleep, Obesity, and Cardiometabolic Disease In Children and Adolescents." Younger people are often overlooked since they don't (yet) present with cardiovascular disease. Yet, many of the unhealthy behavior patterns like unhealthy eating and sedentary activity are established in this age group. Read more: sleephealthresearch.com/book_sleepheal…

Led by some of the leading experts at the overlap between sleep and cancer -- Lexi Muench, Krista Greeley, and Sheila Garland -- this chapter outlines the many ways that sleep health overlaps with cancer care in terms of increasing risk, presenting as a symptom, and being relevant for treatment. Chapter 34 in SLEEP AND HEALTH extends the discussion of insomnia to an area that is less well known -- the link between "Insomnia and Cardiometabolic Disease Risk." Led by Julio Fernandez-Mendoza, a leading researcher and clinician in this area, this chapter outlines how insomnia -- not just short sleep duration -- is an important factor in overall cardiometabolic health and why addressing insomnia may lead to improved health outcomes. Chapter 32 in SLEEP AND HEALTH is another new chapter in this edition and is focused on "Sleep and Dementia Risk." An explosion of research in the past several years has linked sleep health to dementia risk in a number of ways. Not only does neurodegeneration worsen sleep and rhythms, but the worsening sleep may not only be a risk factor but may also be part of the disease proces. This chapter was led by some of the leaders in this emerging field -- Chris Kaufmann, Chien-Yu Tseng, Brendan Lucey, Atul Malhotra, and Adam Spira -- and provides a comprehensive overview of this exciting new area! Alcohol may be the most-used sleep-promoting drug in the world, but its effects on sleep are complicated. Led by Subhajit "Babi" Chakravorty -- one of the most knowledgeable sleep physicians in the world when it comes to addiction psychiatry -- this chapter outlines what we know about how alcohol interacts with sleep, and how insomnia often overlaps with alcoholism.
