Writing about Former Senator Murray Sinclair and realized I have the immense privilege to say that the first interview I ever conducted in my journalism career was with Sinclair and the kindness and patience he showed me. Sending condolences to his family.

The @TimesColonist did an interview with Lauzon about 1939, which cites my @thewalrus investigation but doesn’t engage w/ gaps between Lauzon’s claims and the facts of my reporting. Notably, Lauzon is doubling down on her claim that her dad attended residential school (1/x)

@JoelyViveiros @michellecyca I can see why you say that, but I think it would be difficult for anyone to come out of the play thinking the IRS reality (including forced attendance, abuse, deaths, racism, attempted assimilation) didn't happen or that it was okay.

Based solely on what was on stage, the play 1939 that opened last night @BelfryTheatre in #YYJ is a nuanced, engaging, multi-layered, touching piece of art that I think is worth seeing.

@timescolonist @thewalrus @peggy_blair I think if reporters are going to cover Indigenous identity claims, it’s important for them to understand how these claims operate. Otherwise they risk presenting inaccurate and misleading statements as facts.

@timescolonist @thewalrus My grandma was not educated beyond Grade 6 in residential school — a typical experience. @peggy_blair, who heard hundreds of claims as an adjudicator for the settlement process, never encountered a survivor who learned Shakespeare.

@caldervenice not my argument; I find it hard to grasp that an arts organization would ignore reporting that significantly contradicts the value and integrity of a production, by plowing ahead without any acknowledgement. particularly a theatre w/ a stated commitment to reconciliation.

I'm trying to grasp the concept that anytime anyone raises concerns about a play, the theatre should cancel the production.

an important part of this story is that 1939 is opening tomorrow at @BelfryTheatre in Victoria; the theatre has been aware of the concerns around this play for several weeks and has chosen to proceed with it anyway
