@CharleneWhite I've experienced the same, several times. At the old place, I was called Dev several times, even by listeners. My reply was always "no, I'm the other one..." 😩

The first 4 times it happened today I shrugged it off. But the 5th time was as I was leaving, by someone who’d spent 10mins having a chat. I honestly left feeling that it doesn’t matter where you are in life, some ppl will always mistake you for the other black girl in the office

I’m used to being mistaken for my other black @loosewomen ladies. We all are tbh. Some ppl are too lazy to work out black women don’t all look alike. But I’ve spent today at a do with my LW fam where multiple times I was called Brenda. My response? “No, I’m the other black one”.

@FunkButcher @isthatscully Plus the landscape changes. The aspiration shift within the genre gets clearer. Another key moment is Kenny Dope, Ella Eyre, Alok & Never Dull’s record released today. A big old HOUSE record with commercial viability released on a major with Kenny getting main artist credit.

Good grief if Beyoncé has any House stuff on her new project as @isthatscully predicted the sound is going to shift dramatically!!!…. it actually coincides with some really cool independent Black owned new House & Techno platforms taking off in America right now.

@FunkButcher You know my feelings on Dance music, it’s origins and where it needs to go next. This is a vital next step and, personally, I’m here for it! Could very well be that paradigm shift we’ve been working towards 🤷🏾‍♂️

@FunkButcher Gordo on the co-prod for 6 of the cuts too. It definitely lacks the club bangers that you’d probably expect from a project of that calibre (hence why I agree about your edits and remixes comment) but Black Coffee’s sound always has been more melodic and understated.

Which either A) lead back to the source material for the consumer or B) make the A&Rs job a piece of cake as they do the deal with the bootleg with the most viral numbers.

Hmmmm someone has really been talking to Drake about how the Dance music industry markets music. He knew he didn’t have to over-egg the album because producers will push the hell out of it with unofficial remixes and bootlegs…

@soundfromatown It’s just my own experience to be fair! I can relate to comparing my insides to other people’s outsides & coming up short every time. Only when I stop doing that do I realise that the opportunity being ‘withheld’ probably wasn’t for me, regardless of how much I think I want it.

@mistajam I can relate to this to be honest. I think my original tweet came from me comparing, which again is a pitfall that stops any progress. Thank you for the advice

@soundfromatown I’ve had a lot of experience of ppl who continually change the goalposts over my career. As I look back, I’ve only ever been able to work (and I’ve worked) for opportunities that were meant for me, regardless of blocks gatekeepers placed in the way. Hence the original tweet.

@mistajam At what point did you stop seeking the approval of the gatekeepers? Before or after your ‘big break’? (Genuine question)

@soundfromatown I’m very grateful for my journey so far and honestly wouldn’t change a thing as it’s made me the person I am today… but if only that were true!
