@HasAhmed_ You were a Tory until recently too. Both of us are defectors and I believe sincere ones. I think you're being unfair my friend x

I love the @TimesRadio claim that they are a place of "diverse opinion". My rough totting up of over forty regular voices finds eight committed Labour voices, seven committed Tories, zero Reform. It's a very good channel but the idea it represents all diversity of opinion fairly is complete nonsense. It's the radio station of the uniparty.

Lots of weird takes on the Hungarian election result from both left and right here. Peter Magyar is a socially conservative immigration restrictionist who wants to cut taxes and double the defence budget. He criticized Orban for admitting too many guest workers, and wants to increase Hungary's already generous pro-natal incentives. On virtually every issue, his platform is well to the right of centre, by European standards. His foreign policy is to end Orban's alliance with Putin, remove the Hungarian veto on EU loans to Ukraine, normalize relations with the European Union while opposing more Euro integration, and strengthen relations with Eastern Europe's anti-Russian governments, e.g. Poland. His election was not a sudden shift to the left, but a rejection of Orban's corruption, the failure of his interventionist / statist economic policies, and the humiliation of his relationship with Putin.

@montie Fact Tim. Reform want to make it look like they have endless momentum and all other parties are doomed. That’s absolutely reasonable politics, but it’s also the case that a swing of a couple of percent would transform the situation.

No. Trump didn't lose. The West lost. In the last few weeks we've proven comprehensively that we are decadent. We are unwilling (not unable) to bear the cost of tackling an existential threat. We'll reap what our civilisational weakness has shown.
Daniel Hannan@DanielJHannan

Trump has just lost a war to Iran. I would liken it to the Suez débâcle except that, at Suez, Britain successfully swept Egyptian resistance aside. We were defeated by Eisenhower’s hostility, not Nasser’s tanks. This time, the US just flat out lost - and the world is vastly worse off for it.

As an avid consumer of political biographies I have to say Michael Crick’s Farage is one of the best I’ve read. Fair minded, revelatory offering insight into the making of a serial political entrepreneur.

I hear that at least three journalists are working on rival biographies of Nigel Farage - John Sweeney, Miles Goslett & Tom Bower - all due out later this year. Meanwhile you still buy mine, which was reviewed pretty favourably: worldofbooks.com/en-gb/products…
