I mourn the passing of Patrick Mukabi, the artist behind the iconic paintings in all Java House wall paintings. As a newbie journalist, my bery first assignment was to cover the story of how Mukabi memorialised the 1998 bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi. I have followed his work over the years and my best series from his collection was Market Women. Mukabi did a lot of work teaching youngsters to paint. But above all, he immortalised many aspects of Nairobi social life. He is a national treasure. The city of Nairobi owes him a great of gratitude. We need a City Arts Council to recognise such artists Wangui Maina and Dennis Onsarigo.

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
In 1973, a Brazilian man used a government loan intended for deforestation and hit 'em with an uno reverse card. Antonio Vicente bought 31 hectares of stripped cattle pasture outside São Paulo with credits the military government was handing out to farmers clearing rainforest for agriculture. He took the money and planted trees instead. He planted each one by hand for the next forty years. The land had been razed. The springs were dry and the soil was hard and compacted. Neighbors thought he was insane. His wife even left him for a period. But he kept planting. By the time he was in his eighties, the 31 hectares were Atlantic Forest again. Native trees, understory plants, mammals and birds that hadn't been seen in the region for decades. The springs came back and water flows from his land into the regional watershed year-round. Brazil loses thousands of hectares of rainforest every year. Antonio Vicente added back 31 of them, alone, with a shovel and a half-century of patience. He said he didn't do it to save the world. He did it because a forest was what the land had wanted to be.

1890: rinderpest arrives in East Africa. The Serengeti wildebeest collapse from over a million to 200,000. Ecologists expect the grassland to flourish. Fewer mouths, more grass. Obvious. The grassland goes backwards. 1960s: vaccination clears rinderpest from cattle. The wild herds recover. Ecologists brace for overgrazing. The wildebeest rebuild to 1.5 million. Largest herbivore population on earth. The grassland gets greener. More soil carbon. Lower fire frequency. More tree cover than in 1900. The landscape gets more complex, not less. The papers have been sitting in prestigious journals for decades. The campaigners continue to argue that grazers destroy ecosystems. The largest natural experiment on earth says the opposite and it cannot be cited, because it does not say the right thing. It just sits there. Getting greener.
