Seen here: An aerial view looking north over an intersection in North Miami with the Florida Turnpike, then called the Sunshine State Parkway, in 1967. One year later in 1968, the Sunshine State Parkway was officially renamed Florida’s Turnpike, and was incorporated into the newly formed Florida Department of Transportation to better serve communities for years to come! @America250FL @FloridaTurnpike

You can’t rely on luck when you get behind the wheel impaired. Driving under the influence of alcohol and other impairing substances like marijuana causes slowed reaction time, impaired judgement, reduced alertness, and significantly increases your risk of a crash. Driving impaired could cost you your pot of gold, or worse: your life. Designate a sober driver or schedule a ride share. #CelebrateResponsibly

Florida doesn't just talk space — we fund it. $531M+ invested in spaceport infrastructure through our joint program with FDOT concentrated mostly at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. That investment has leveraged $3.3B in private industry funding. That's how you lead.

This National Surveyor’s Week, FDOT is proud to recognize our team members whose work provides critical data for our construction projects. Their expertise maximizes safety, precision, and long-term success for our communities. Fun fact: before they shaped the nation, Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln mapped it as surveyors!

St. Petersburg is home to Albert Whitted Airport, the site of the world’s first scheduled commercial airline flight back in 1914! Though official construction of the airport began in October 1928, the small airboat that made aviation history years earlier took off from the nearby central yacht basin in St. Petersburg, cementing this location as the birthplace of commercial airline flight. 📸 Albert Whitted Airport, June 1936 @america250fl @MyFDOT_Tampa

When completing FDOT projects, it’s not uncommon to discover outstanding archaeological finds in the process! Widening of State Road 40 adjacent to Silver Springs State Park led FDOT to conduct archaeological excavations of an early Native American settlement, create interpretive signage for park goers, and install a new boardwalk connecting extensive trail networks on either side of the Fort King Waterway. Cultural materials stretching back thousands of years were unearthed thanks to FDOT’s project and can now be experienced by all visitors to the park.

This view shows Mobile Highway (S.R. 10A) in the early 1960’s under construction near the Saufley Field Road intersection. The image highlights the transition from urban to rural roadways, reflecting Florida’s evolving highway standards during the State Road Department era, now known as FDOT. This area connected urban areas to rural communities, supporting economic growth and defense infrastructure. @america250fl @myfdot_nwfl

This photo shows former Chairman of the State Road Board Henry Phillips and staff posing in front of a State Road Department building circa 1921. Phillips was the agencies’ fourth Chairman to be appointed, which was equivalent of being the Secretary of the Department. This practice lasted until 1969 when the State Road Department became the Florida Department of Transportation. He was also responsible for preparing the legislative bill that officially created the State Road Board! @America250FL

During Florida Bicycle Month, we’re here with a few tips on sharing the road responsibly! Bicyclists: Ride predictably, follow traffic laws, and stay visible. Drivers: Stay alert, look for cyclists at intersections and crossings, and yield to cyclists and pedestrians when turning. Friendly reminder: Florida law allows drivers to cross a double yellow line to safely pass a cyclist as long as they keep a 3-ft distance. Together, we all play a role in keeping our roads safe.
