Last week, leaders came together in St. Albert, Alberta where a Muslim man was brutally beaten. An arrest has been made over what appears to be an attack driven by Islamophobia and hate. Listen to this press conference statement by NCCM's advocacy officer Mohamad Awada on the rise of Islamophobic incidents in Alberta. We call on all leaders in Alberta and beyond to take action after this latest attack, where the Muslim survivor sustained serious injuries. We call on leaders to consult closely with community leaders to build a plan to address this current spike in Islamophobia, in Alberta and beyond.

Please see this important statement from MLA Sharif Haji on the recent horrific Islamophobic attack in St. Albert. We call on all leaders to condemn this violence and take action to address the alarming rise in Islamophobia and hate.

I’m deeply disturbed by the reported hate-fueled attack on a Muslim man in St. Albert. We know that our diversity is our treasure, & I’m relieved the suspect is arrested & charges under review. We condemn all forms of hate, against anyone, in Alberta. edmontonjournal.com/news/crime/pol…

We are horrified by yet another incident of violent Islamophobia that occurred last Friday in St. Albert, Alberta. A Muslim man and his wife were driving back home from the Muslim Association of St. Albert when he was allegedly brutally assaulted. The man was allegedly slammed to the ground, and was accosted with racial obscenities, the attacker called him a "f***king immigrant," insulted Islam, used the n-word and threatened to kill him. He suffered a laceration to his right eye and pavement burns.  Violent Islamophobia has continued to be on the rise, and so has the rise of hatred directed towards immigrants across the province of Alberta.  We cannot stand by and have instances like this occur on a regular basis, all levels of government must condemn this incident and commit to taking action, as well as changing the current racist discourse around immigration.  We will be in contact with the victim and local authorities.

It is utterly disgusting to see another Muslim space in the GTA, this time in Mississauga, be allegedly invaded and vandalized.  Copies of the Quran and other books have been found ripped up and strewn across the floor, in what appears to be yet another incident of Islamophobia.  Just this week, we saw death threats made towards a Muslim community in Aylmer, Gatineau.  Islamophobia continues to be on the rise, as our communities are still healing from Canada's deadliest incidents of hate, the Quebec City Mosque shooting, and the killing of three generations of a family in London.  We call on all leaders in the area and beyond to denounce this incident, condemn Islamophobia, and connect with community members to build a plan that addresses the rise in anti-Muslim hate.  We hope for the full restoration of this space for prayer and use by the community.

We are horrified and disturbed by the recent threats and calls for violence against Muslims and Palestinians, received by a major Islamic centre in Gatineau, Quebec. Islamophobic rhetoric has increasingly saturated political and public discussions in Quebec. It is sadly not surprising to see some hate-motivated actors feeling emboldened enough to threaten real violence against their Muslim neighbours. Troublingly, this status quo echoes the climate that preceded the 2017 mass shooting, where a Quebec city mosque also experienced numerous threats and vandalism incidents before a gunman killed six worshippers there (and injuring many others). Thankfully, a suspect has been arrested in relation to the Gatineau incident. We remain in contact with the community and will continue to monitor the situation to ensure safety and accountability. We call on all elected officials and political leaders to unequivocally condemn these Islamophobic threats and calls to violence, and to take concrete steps to ease tensions in Quebec.

This week, the NCCM team was delighted to gather a large number of Muslim community leaders in British Columbia for dozens of meetings across party lines. This BC Advocacy Day centred on a number of urgent issues for our community, from standing against the rise of hate to standing up for the Charter. At a time of rising Islamophobia and hate, it is time for action.

The overall rise in hate, including Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian racism, and anti-Semitism, has been one of Canada’s greatest challenges. Threats, violence, and hatred cannot go unchecked. There must be justice and accountability. Calling for the destruction and violent treatment of any community is utterly unacceptable. It is a positive step that, in this case, such threats and pronouncements have been treated seriously. cbc.ca/news/canada/ma…

Today, our staff attended the Spring Economic Statement tech briefing in Ottawa. Islamophobia has been on the rise for many years. Muslim Canadians have witnessed a surge of violence, and faced many close calls that could have ended in another tragedy. Canada is the leading G7 nation with Islamophobia driven murders in the past seven years, including at the Quebec City Mosque Massacre. We note the efforts of the federal government in their Spring Economic Update of 2026 to address the rise of hate by investing $75 million dollars over 4 years to further bolster the Canada Community Safety Program (CCSP). This program is designed to help places of worship, including mosques, bolster their security to protect their congregants better. This is a necessary and welcome step. Canadians cannot forget the tragedy that occurred in the Quebec City Mosque on Jan 29th 2017 or on the property of the IMO Mosque in September 2020. In the past, programs similar to the CCSP have sadly not adequately supported community spaces, given the incredibly long waiting process as well as the challenges with navigating the application process that institutions were forced to face in order to be considered for funding. We are looking forward to the CCSP filling in the gaps of the past, and providing faith communities with the protection they need and deserve. Lastly, there are many promising initiatives in the Spring Economic Update of 2026 that reiterated Canada’s commitments to bolster Canada’s sovereignty, economy, and nation as a whole. We urge the government to continue consulting with civil society organizations and faith based communities to ensure their strategies are robust, and will achieve its intended purpose. We look forward to continuing to engage with the government to fulfill our shared vision of a strong Canada.

It is deeply disturbing to witness the rise of Islamophobia in our schools and on our campuses. Please see this important statement from MP Corey Hogan on the need for all to feel safe in and outside of our schools, in light of the horrific threats recently aimed at the University of Calgary MSA. We call on all leaders to condemn these threats and to sit down with students, administrators, and community members to build a real plan to address the rise in Islamophobia and hate.
Corey Hogan 🇨🇦@coreyhoganyyc

I am deeply concerned by the hateful threat sent to the Muslim Students’ Association at UCalgary. Let me be clear: Islamophobia has no place on our campuses or in our communities. Everyone deserves to feel safe where they study, work, and live. Thinking of everyone affected — my office is here to support. f.mtr.cool/xzxyzpnkwa

This Monday, the NCCM team convened community leaders in meetings with Premier Wab Kinew, the Leader of the Opposition Obby Khan, and dozens of MLAs for an engaging and productive Manitoba Advocacy Day. We met to talk about how we can make Manitoba better for all Manitobans through education and standing up for our constitutional freedoms. We will always work across the aisles with partners in Manitoba and beyond to address the issues that matter most to our communities.

Today, on Charter Day, we want to appreciate Minister Fraser's commitment to considering putting guardrails on the quasi-emergency power of the notwithstanding clause. While today we are celebrating the Charter, just yesterday 100 Muslim women lost their positions in Quebec because of Bill 21 and subsequent bills that attempt to shield their human rights breaches behind the notwithstanding clause. Putting guardrails and real, hard limits on how the notwithstanding clause is applied by elected officials is absolutely core to the protecting of our Charter, the rights of Canadian, and democracy in Canada. It is time for Canada to implement these guardrails as soon as possible. Without such limits, laws like Quebec's Bill 21 can be passed with the notwithstanding clause to erode Canadians' guaranteed civil liberties. It is time to stand up for Canadian democracy.

Please see this statement from Hon. Randeep Sarai on the recent murder of a Canadian citizen, and the many civilians across Lebanon. These actions and killings by the Israeli forces are war crimes. They must be interrogated and investigated. It is time for Canada to renew condemnations of these latest strikes, and to impose targeted sanctions on the Netanyahu government.
Randeep S. Sarai@randeepssarai

My deepest condolences to the family of a Canadian killed in Lebanon and to all those who have lost loved ones in this horrible conflict. Too many innocent people have been killed. Civilians must be protected and we call on all parties to ceasefire, immediately.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who was killed in southern Lebanon last week. We continue to call on Israel to cease its attacks and urge all parties to pursue a durable, diplomatic solution that brings an end to the violence. My thoughts are with the Lebanese Canadian community, and with all those affected by this ongoing conflict.
