@KT_Carlisle In the UK the printing capacity is at full stretch. Any book over 100k will not fit into the regular regime. Stopping a machine to reset spines and packaging for a thicker book pushes everything else back. So publishers are reluctant.
English

Do you agree with lit agents that manuscripts over 100k words are too long?
I don’t think word count should be the sole reason for passing on a project. If the story demands it, the book should be however long it needs to be to tell that story. However, books of this length are more expensive to publish, so I understand why this is a concern re: offers of representation. After all, an agent’s job is to champion your work, and with these manuscripts being inherently harder to sell due to the cost of production, it would be irresponsible for them to extend an offer knowing that the odds are already stacked against you for the submission process.

@StevejMchugh Perfect! Brightened my day! Congratulations and all the best! BTW have you noticed that no one considers writing to be 'work?'

@KLRodgers4 If you are prepared to spend some money I'd suggest a paid membership to @JerichoWriters Their hundreds of hours of video tutorials will teach you everything on and around the subject of writing, self or trad Publishing. Their 'Agent match' is probably worth the price alone.

The publishing process is wild. If you would have told me writing the book is only 10% of the process, (and maybe the least important part) I would have thought you were joking.
I feel so overwhelmed and underprepared and lost.

Question:
Where do you stand on ‘had had’ … ?
I want to write:
‘He had had an extra helping of beans.’
Is this okay?

@books4kimberly Check if the folders have gone into your recycle bin
If the folders were empty try putting a 'holding' file in them. Right-click in the folder, select new text file and name it something like 'hold'.
Windows Defender will delete stuff without telling you. Usually files.

I was at a talk last week on the state of publishing in the UK. Here, if the word count is over 100k they can't look at it unless you're already an established author. There's just not enough room in the printing industry schedule to cater for many big books.

I’ve been reading through queries this morning, and I’ve noticed a lot of high word count fantasy. So make sure you’re keeping that in mind as you edit and query! Generally anything over 150,000 is going to give me pause #querytip

@HeatherCashman Isn't it polite to advise an agent that you're no longer taking offers? Otherwise you could be wasting their time.
English

If you really care about your publishing career, don't limit your choices.
When you query an agent and then email again them saying you've accepted another agent's offer, one has to wonder why you queried the first agent at all...
Are you throwing spaghetti at a wall? Or did you just not care who offered and you jumped? A third or forth reason?
I've had many people come back to me months or a year later after this happened because things didn't work out, and it really makes me wonder why this happens. Do these writers actually care, or are they just so desperate that they won't give themselves all the options for such an epic career decision? Or did they think that some agents were a fall-back plan? Lowly, last-ditch efforts? If the latter, then bullet dodged.
Go with me or don't go with me, I'm not offended in the least. I know I'm not the perfect agent for everyone. I'll click the archive button and move on.
But I'll say it again: If you really care about your career, don't limit your choices.

@ravens_fangirl I sold a gazillion of those every year until the 90s. Those little suckers kept many independent camera shops going. Just the developing and printing covered all the business costs. I preferred the Fuji ones, if you squeezed the pot, the top would fly off with a satisfying pop.
