Some athletes are tested by competition. Others are tested by life.
For Damian Thauberger, a dedicated swimmer, the season took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that caused uncontrollable seizures, keeping him out of the pool for eight months.
What followed was a journey of recovery, resilience, and determination. Through patience and perseverance, Damian worked to rebuild his strength and confidence one step at a time.
Now back in the pool as a senior, Damian's return represents more than athletic achievement. It is a testament to courage, commitment, and the ability to keep moving forward in the face of adversity.
His story reminds us that success is not always measured by results, but by the strength it takes to overcome challenges and continue pursuing your goals.

Losing is part of the experience. It is not failure.
And in education-based athletics, it’s never the end of the story.
Loss teaches accountability.
It builds resilience.
It challenges athletes to respond, adjust, and improve.
The outcome may not always be what you want — but the lesson is always there.
What has a tough loss taught you?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder that the well-being of students in education-based activities matters both on and off the field, court, stage and performance space.
For many students involved in athletics, performing arts and activities, these experiences provide more than competition or performance. They create connection, support systems, confidence, community, laughter, growth and lifelong memories.
To continue supporting student well-being, the NFHS Learning Center is now offering a free Mental Wellness course for students focused on building healthy habits, resilience and support resources.

Academics and athletics go hand in hand.
How you prepare matters. The same discipline it takes to succeed in sports applies in the classroom and beyond. Accountability, consistency, and effort shape success on and off the field and court.
In education-based athletics, academics come first.

Do you know how education-based activities are supported?
High school sports are built on a partnership.
State associations lead at the state level — organizing competition, setting eligibility standards, and running championships for their member schools.
The NFHS provides national leadership — writing and refining sport rules, supporting student-athlete safety and education, and working alongside our 51 state association members across the country.
Together, this structure keeps education-based athletics and performing arts consistent, safe, and accessible for millions of students, and helps to ensure that high school sports and activities stay focused on what matters most — education, opportunity, and student development.
