As things ease up on the frontline please do not forget about NHS staff. They are battered, bruised and traumatised. Many have lost colleagues, over 840 healthcare workers have died. RT if you will not forget 💙

We also know that even once the covid wards have started to empty, after the ICU surge units close as ICU contracts back to its usual footprint, we still have an intimidatingly huge backlog of other people who have been anxiously but patiently waiting for care.

Here's another (long) thread about normalcy bias - this time in relation to healthcare systems breaking down. I will start by saying the worst case scenario in this thread hasn't happened here yet, but there is a distinct possibility it might happen in some places for a time.

PM said today that the NHS in London has "coped magnificently". He also said "ICU capacity has not yet been overwhelmed in the way some of us feared it might be." Yday in Northwick Park hospital, northwest London, their head of ICU told me they're managing "1 or 2 beds ahead"

Disturbing findings of new report into the mental health of frontline NHS staff. -Nearly half of intensive care staff reported symptoms of PTSD, severe depression or anxiety. -More than 1 in 7 drs and nearly 1 in 5 nurses working in ICU reported thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

I've spent my weekend on the ICU proning team @NHSHomerton this is where we take a very sick patient and put them on to their front to help with oxygenation. They will then stay in that position for around the next eighteen hours or so.
