Can Singapore become more family-friendly if a company's workplace culture still penalises parents for using parental leave or flexible work arrangements? In a commentary, Asst Prof Chong Sin Hui from @NanyangBizSch explains that employers and managers are often the real gatekeepers and suggests practical ways that family-friendly policies can be implemented better. Seashells might hold the blueprint for the future of sustainable materials. Assoc Prof Hortense Le Ferrand from #NTUsg’s School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and School of Materials Science & Engineering explains how their microscopic “brick and mortar” structure gives them remarkable strength, despite being made of calcium carbonate – the same material as chalk, which is famously brittle and easy to break. These insights could enable the development of materials as strong as metal, without the environmental cost of mining and extraction. This #InternationalDayofZeroWaste, we spotlight #NTUsg student Ananya Varshney, whose social innovation recently took centre stage at a United Nations event. After her team’s win at the APRU SDG Global Challenge Social Innovation for Impact and Sustainability Pitching Competition 2025, Ananya was invited to present her project, CareVend, at a UN side event held alongside the 13th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) 2026 in Bangkok. There, she brought CareVend to an audience of researchers, policymakers and sustainability leaders from across the region, detailing how it turns plastic waste into access to essential sanitary products through vending machines that accept plastic as currency – addressing both waste reduction and menstrual equity. She also spoke at the Asian Youth Dialogue on the role of youth in shaping trustworthy AI in Asia-Pacific. “Presenting our work, receiving valuable feedback, and connecting with passionate individuals in the sustainability space was an incredible learning experience,” shared Ananya. #NTUsgEducation #NTUsgInternational #NTUsgSustainability #AIatNTUsg @NTU_EEE @unescap

An AI system that predicts machine failures before they happen, developed by an interdisciplinary team of #NTUsgStudents, has taken the top prize at a global hackathon. PredictIQ is an agentic AI system that not only detects potential failures early, but also recommends actionable solutions for engineers — advancing how industries approach predictive maintenance. Their innovation secured first place at the Elastic{ON} Hackathon 2026, outperforming more than 80 participants, including industry professionals. Built by Akshat Jain, Arushi Verma, Dheemant Rastogi and Sanjana Yalamanchili, the project highlights how interdisciplinary collaboration can translate cutting-edge AI into real-world industrial applications. #NTUsgEducation #NTUsgInterdisciplinary #AIatNTUsg @NTU_EEE

Tracing the tides of time: As sea levels rise and coastlines shift, understanding extreme events is more critical than ever. Yet most satellite records only date to the 1980s, and tide gauge data spans just 30 to 50 years. This means rare but high-impact events, such as once-in-a-century storms or tsunamis, may not be fully captured. In Episode 3 of #NTUsgThinks, Prof Adam Switzer from #NTUsg’s Asian School of the Environment (@ntu_ase) and Director of CIFAL@NTU explores how insights from long-term records can help strengthen coastal resilience planning. ntu.sg/NTUsgThinksEp3 #NTUsgResearch #NTUsgInnovation #NTUsgInterdisciplinary #NTUsgSustainability #NTUsgProfs #Sustainability #ClimateChange @ScienceNTU @CoastalLabNTU

Tea-mwork that takes the top spot: #NTUsg Nanyang Business School students Marcus Lim and Gerwyn Teo took first place at the CHAGEE & NBS MarkeTHINK Club Brand Marketing Case Competition 2026 with a strategy that fused analytical rigour and creative storytelling. Even with 17 case competition wins between them, this competition proved particularly challenging. They had to work across continents while on exchange, and when unforeseen circumstances meant Marcus had to present solo in the finals, he still managed to deliver the team's pitch with clarity and composure – a testament to the strong foundation built through NTU’s case training ecosystem and curriculum, from consumer insights to strategic brand management. Congratulations to the duo on this well-deserved win. Photos: NTU Business Solutions Case Club and NBS MarkeTHINK Club #NTUsgStudents #NTUsgEducation #NTUsgInternational

Small bugs, big secrets: What looks like a simple insect is covered in intricate microscopic structures, invisible to the naked eye but essential to how it moves, senses and survives. At the @ArtSciMuseum at Marina Bay Sands, “Insects: Microsculptures Magnified” brings this hidden world into view. On display until 10 May, the exhibition was developed with @ntu_ase’s TEE Lab and led by Associate Professor Eleanor Slade, highlighting how research on tropical biodiversity is helping us better understand the ecosystems we depend on. #NTUsgResearch

Why is Singapore investing more in space and setting up a space agency, despite being a small tropical city-state without a launch site? In a commentary with @straits_times, #NTUsg’s Prof Erick Lansard explains how Singapore’s equatorial location offers a strategic advantage for climate and Earth observation satellites. Prof Lansard also notes that countries do not need launch capability to play a meaningful role in space. Smaller economies can contribute through specialised technologies, payload design and data applications. For example, NTU has begun testing an AI module on nanosatellites through a new Space Access Programme. Read more here: ntu.sg/Singapore-and-… #NTUsgResearch @NTU_EEE

Tiny bacteria for a big breakthrough in battery recycling: #NTUsg researchers are using biohydrometallurgy to accelerate battery recycling. By introducing cultured microbes to crushed battery material known as “black mass”, high-efficiency recovery can be achieved in as little as six hours, reducing reliance on conventional chemical processes. In episode 2 of the #NTUsgThinks podcast, #NTUsg Professor Madhavi Srinivasan, Executive Director of the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N), shares how this and other innovations are reshaping the way the world thinks about e-waste recycling. ntu.sg/NTUsgThinksEp2 #NTUsgResearch #NTUsgInnovation #NTUsgInterdisciplinary #NTUsgSustainability #NTUsgProfs #Sustainability #CircularEconomy
