As the DWOB North court case continued in Cape Town on Monday 23 March 2026 – communities and organisations in the Eastern Cape protested in solidarity.

Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal communities and organisations protested in solidarity as a court case challenging a decision to grant an Environmental Authorisation to drill ultra deep exploration wells in the Deep Water Orange Basin block was heard in the Western Cape High Court.

Today in the Western Cape High Court in SA, fishers & civil society came together to defend their ocean heritage & livelihoods, and to call for better decision-making from government when it comes to oil and gas exploration off the coastline. #teepsaDWOB @TheGreenConnect

@TheGreenConnect 4. Lastly, that this project (and others like it) go against the international commitments the country has made to stop using fossil fuels and address #climatechange. This project also goes against government's own energy planning. #teepsaDWOB

@TheGreenConnect 2. The risks to the natural environment from ultra-deep drilling (2000 metres!) and reliance on un-tested plans in the event of a well blowout. 3. The coastal community, including marine life, the people on the shoreline, but also the whole of SA, were not properly considered.

@TheGreenConnect Despite 8 internal appeals against #TotalEnergies plans for DWOB, the Department of Environment dismissed all of them, giving TEEPSA sign off to continue with exploration plans. #teepsaDWOB

@TheGreenConnect This case is against #TotalEnergies SA who want to explore for oil & gas in the deep waters of the Deep Water Orange Basin (DWOB). They have a few interests in various "blocks" across our coastline - and recently were also in court for their interests in Block 5/6/7 #teepsaDWOB
