Can Wilder World avoid being compared to Cyberpunk 2077 or GTA? I think that's an important question for a game reaching for AAA status, because the comparisons will come. Like most other such Web3 projects, Wilder Team spent a significant amount of time making a pretty world. The Wiami map is rich with details and neon-covered buildings. The car models look slick. It's impressive to take in. But because Wilder World is so visually complex, it's going to be limited to PC and console. That means tapping into the Western gaming market, where the bar for open-world games is sky-high, isn't optional. Like it or not, pretty alone doesn't differentiate a game anymore in that niche. Not after the likes of Crimson Desert captivated fans with the prettiest world yet. GTA 6 is likely to push hyper-realistic graphics even further this fall, and eventually, so will The Witcher 4. That's why Wilder World's lack of depth is a concern. Some of it I can excuse because of the game's super early status, like the lack of tutorials, quests, activities, in-game collectibles, progression mechanics and so on. But some things will be harder to adjust. The combat mechanics still feel very much like the Unreal 5 template with a few tweaks. They're too similar to Star Atlas and Infinity Rising, two other competing Unreal 5 games. The driving also feels out-of-the-box. You don't feel the car's weight when you corner. You can't drift even though all the vehicles are copies of mid-rear supercars, and they all drive the same. So yes, it's still early in the dev cycle. Yes, Wilder World represents an exciting step forward for Web3. But if those gameplay elements don't grow into something more distinct in future playtests, the game will have a hard time standing out against leading games in Web2.
