@MaryCreagh_ Why is nature more important in a protected landscape? When will realisation dawn that it's important everywhere? We're nolonger looking at baselining to see how our biodiversity improves. We'll be peaklining, to record how it declines as funding disappears.

Europe recognises this, but uk gov seems set on treating uk farming as the enemy, with blind confidence we will always be able to import food @Steph_Peacock. Europe looking to bolster home production of inputs, uk gov answer is to reduce sanctions on Russia and cap food prices.
Christophe Hansen@CHansenEU

🌾Food security starts with fertiliser security For farmers, fertilisers can mean the difference between a harvest and no harvest at all Across Europe, rising energy prices are ↗️input costs for farmers. This is not just a farming issue. It’s a food security issue for all of us

@dufitalexis1 This is wrong in so many ways (not least skylarks nesting in hedges) that i don't have time to list, all i do agree with is that hedges are under valued. Not all farms are stripped of their hedges, visit parts of Leicestershire for instance. Love my hedges.

Britain has lost around half its hedgerows since the Second World War. The wildlife that depended on them has followed a similar trajectory. 🌿 The old field boundary — a strip of blackthorn, hawthorn, dog rose, and elder two to five metres wide between cultivated ground — was not wasted agricultural space. It was a functioning ecological system that maintained pollinators, pest predators, and farmland birds across centuries of working land. Each hedgerow is a nesting corridor for grey partridge and skylark, a foraging habitat for brown hares and hedgehogs, a site for solitary bee colonies, and a windbreak for the crops alongside it. The field cultivated to its very edge gives the maximum return this season. It removes the populations of beneficial insects, farmland birds, and small mammals on which stable long-term production depended. The field with a hedgerow yields a few percent less per cultivated hectare — but remains productive across decades without compensatory chemical inputs. The documented declines in grey partridge, lapwing, and skylark across the British agricultural landscape since the 1970s are directly linked to field consolidation and hedgerow removal. Practical equivalents for the garden or smallholding: - A strip of wildflower meadow at least one metre wide at the plot boundary - A clump of nettles in a shaded corner as a habitat base for red admiral, small tortoiseshell, and peacock butterflies - A native mixed hedge of blackthorn and hawthorn in place of post-and-wire fencing - A section of uncut grass between rows of fruit trees #HedgerowHabitat #FarmlandWildlife #NativeHedge #GardenWildlife

@suerowsell @JohnPretty2o2o The stoats are at risk of being trampled by rabbits here at present, we are snidded out with them so probably why the stoats are doing so well. And they are not alone...

@FarmingUK Good question when educational access not yet added to SFI. Equally, should schools be made aware of the funded educational access opportunities that are available. A resource funded by government, but not promoted by the education department.

@IanThewildside As a farmer I can create scrub easily enough, and I agree, some of the best habitat on the farm. The problem for me being, the last time I looked, defra funding for scrub was around £28 per hectare. That's roughly a 0.0028% return on investment.

The fact that farmers and all users have just had very high sets of guidelines and new regulations may of slipped your notice . Around buildings only on farms no different to tescos or any council buildings old news that has been dealt with , unfortunately it will always be a problem in town as more rats there than countryside .you cannot say where a poison rat will die or be carried too but all we can is to mitigate risk something that is high on the list of trained professionals that use it .

When poison designed for rodents is turning up in birds of prey and mammals across the country, it shows the scale of environmental damage we're causing. We need action to monitor, regulate and phase out these harmful substances before the damage goes further. #Wildlife

@TrooperSnooks @AdrianRamsay I seem to recall our MP called 'following the party line regardless', "collective responsibility" when my husband went to discuss farming issues with her.

@AdrianRamsay Is that why you didn't even bother turning up to vote on Budget resolution 50, despite swearing to us, your constituents, that you would do "everything in your power" to help farmers? #noes" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/…

This is true if you are content with a system where MPs don't engage with what they are voting on and just get pointed towards a voting lobby by a party whip. It's crucial to democracy that MPs engage with the content of each vote and come to an informed view.
Jack Elsom@JackElsom

The “MPs shouldn’t drink and vote” debate is a bit of a red herring because so often there's no cognitive function involved in voting. Most MPs show up to the voting lobbies when the bells ring, are told by their whips which division lobby to go through, and it’s job done. As long as they’re able to walk in a straight line the booze is neither here nor there.
