If you head to the grocery store soon, you might see an item missing in the produce aisle. Carrots are low in supply right now, after some cold and then hot extremes in California this winter, where most of the U.S. supply is grown. Experts say, the success of wholesale cultivation rests on predictability, especially in temperate climates; farmers know when to plant and when to harvest based on observable weather patterns. Even one anomalous week can disrupt the chain. bit.ly/4t812eo

The Trump Administration will shift into a higher gear as it reviews New Hampshire’s request to opt out of motor vehicle emissions inspections. Rather than the standard 18-month timeline for a ruling, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday that it will give the state an up-or-down decision on its petition to end inspections by the end of 2026, about six months faster than expected. bit.ly/4t4dSKA

With the temperature moderating in New Hampshire, many people are noticing opossums re-appearing in their neighborhoods. Although they aren’t particularly well-adapted for New Hampshire winters, suffering from frostbite on their hairless ears and tails, they are present throughout the state, and plentiful enough to have been named the official state marsupial. They are the only native marsupial in the U.S. bit.ly/4sn8u5e

The Trump administration's expansion of migrant detention facilities is igniting opposition in communities across the political and geographic spectrum, as the administration moves to scale up its detention footprint to fuel its campaign to arrest, detain and deport the largest number of immigrants in modern U.S. history. nhpr.org/2026-03-23/map…

Since January 2026, Portsmouth has been used as a refueling stop for eight charter deportation flights to Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, according to data from ICE Flight Monitor, a part of nonprofit organization Human Rights First. This is a shift in how the airport is being used by federal immigration. Between July and October of last year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement flights through Portsmouth used to be “shuffle flights” — domestic transfers of New England detainees to other U.S. airports near ICE facilities. bit.ly/3NIshwR

Some of the top stories in New Hampshire this week: The Executive Council approved over $100 million in federal funding to go toward health care access in rural New Hampshire. The state Attorney General's office is reviewing North Country Healthcare, which operates hospitals in Berlin, Lancaster and Colebrook. And the NH Supreme Court ruled this week that the way police obtained cellphone location data without a warrant to track down murder suspect Logan Clegg was unconstitutional. Clegg was convicted and sentenced to at least 100 years in prison for allegedly killing a Concord couple in 2022. All that and more on this week's New Hampshire News Recap⤵️ bit.ly/40IFzws

For legal sports wagering in New Hampshire on March Madness, and any other event, DraftKings is the only game in town: the state has signed a multi-year contract with the firm that calls for a split of the proceeds. But the rapid rise of prediction markets could put a dent in long-term revenue from sports wagering. Since neither Kalshi nor Polymarket has entered into any agreement with the state, New Hampshire won’t receive any portion of the money the firms collect. bit.ly/4bp94JW

New Grafton Police Chief Jeffrey Cogswell has stepped down just one week after being elected to the position. “After considerable reflection this weekend, I feel it would not be in the town’s best interest for me to accept the position,” Cogswell wrote on Facebook and in a letter to the Selectboard. bit.ly/4bUcbte

It was about 6:30 last Wednesday evening, and Merrimack town manager Paul Micali was busy. He only had 30 minutes until the town’s deliberative session began. Despite the busyness, he was grateful these were the tasks that were occupying him. “Merrimack's getting back to normalcy,” he said. bit.ly/4cWCAb4

A bill that would allow electric utilities to own a certain quota of fossil fuel and nuclear generation was endorsed Tuesday by a second House committee. The proposal would enable utilities to own natural gas and nuclear generation for the first time since a turn-of-the-century shakeup in utility regulation removed power generation from their domain. As proposed, it also includes the repeal of certain emissions and efficiency requirements for those prospective utility-funded fossil fuel generators. bit.ly/4lFXnSn

Chris Leo was on his way home from dinner, driving along Spruce Street in Manchester, when several cavernous holes appeared. There was no way out but through. “Think of a black abyss, like a black hole, and then double it, is basically the deepness of these potholes,” Leo said. “It was like the Mariana Trench.” In one of those immense craters, he lost a tire. Leo’s experience isn’t unique. This winter had all the ingredients for epic potholes: bitter cold, warm spells and wet weather. There are hundreds of reports of potholes in Manchester alone that haven’t yet been resolved. nhpr.org/nh-news/2026-0…

Along with chronic pain, mental health conditions are some of the top reasons people use marijuana for medical purposes. But a sweeping review of cannabis studies over the past 45 years concludes there is little to no high-quality evidence showing this is effective. bit.ly/4rHXNJB
