It’s not the bagel, it’s what the bagel represents. In 18 years, she’s probably received a million things *he* likes and close to nothing *she* likes because he is always thinking about himself. He says that he will apologize and *try* to be better, but he won’t. You don’t try to be interested in someone; you either are or you aren’t. She spent 18 years with a man who is uninterested, and any improvements will be short-lived because his newly found interest is motivated by the threat. When the threat subsides, so will his interest. He will continue to waste her life until she leaves.

Newborns do not need developmental toys. They just need your face, your voice, and your attention. You can buy every toy on the market and your baby will still prefer staring at your face. Your face moves, changes expression, makes sound, and responds to them in real time. Babies are born with a preference for face like patterns, and within days they can tell your face apart from a stranger's. You make a silly face and they are captivated. A $30 rattle comes no where close. Do not waste money on toys the first few months. Just look at your baby and talk to them. That is enough.

we’re glossing over that it’s other black people making her feel this way on top of the racism she faces from the white competitors who have routinely disrespected her. She’s literally being bullied at all angles and there’s absolutely no way her mental health is unaffected.
