I attended the funeral of a young care leaver who took his own life. I didn’t know him personally, but I was asked to attend and I went out of respect. What struck me most was the absence of anyone from the local authority. When tragedies like this happen, there should be a duty for someone in power to be there—to acknowledge the life lost, to show respect, and to recognise responsibility. I don’t believe we need yet another review costing who knows how much, only for nothing meaningful to change afterwards. We already know there are serious failures. What’s missing is action. My worry is this. Last night I sat with 28 incredible young people in Peterborough — all aged 16–18, all in the care system, all living alone or in housing projects and trying to survive the best they can. Their strength moved me deeply, but what hit me hardest was that not a single one of them has any faith left in this government. Not one. They’ve been failed too many times. And then I had to deliver news that felt like another blow, that the Minister — someone I know personally and respect — will not continue to pursue making care experience a protected characteristic. I explained our amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing Bill- Extending corporate parenting, but changing the wording from being alert to having due regard. Because thats the difference between life and death. This was just one room. One group. But there are thousands of young people like them across the country who have been let down yet again. I will keep travelling, meeting them, and offering what apology I can — though we all know an apology can’t fix what they’re living through. What frightens me most is this, some of these young people may not be here next year if nothing changes. Last year, 91 young people who left care took their own lives. That’s just the number we know about — and we all know there are more. This is why I will never stop fighting to make care experience a protected characteristic alongside my friend and colleague Terry Galloway, and together we will not stop. The government already has the evidence. It has the data. It has the stories. So the question is no longer what do we need? — it’s how many more lives have to be lost before action is taken? I have huge respect for colleagues in government, including Josh MacAlister, and I know he is working hard to support this movement. But extending corporate parenting alone is not enough. Not even close. It is time — long past time — to listen to people with lived experience. Because children in care are not broken. The system is. And until that truth is acted on, more young people will be failed, and more families will be grieving when they shouldn’t have to. @SkyNews @NickMartinSKY @TerryGalloway
