My thoughts on WSJ story: 1) Both Iran & US are targeting outside the CENTCOM AOR (INDOPACOM); 2) It's a rare moment in the era of the "Indo-Pacific" region when the Indian Ocean theater has more hotspots than the Pacific theater; 3) Watching for IO Zone of Peace discourse again

New: Iran fired two intermediate-range ballistic missiles at Diego Garcia, a U.S.-U.K. base in the Indian Ocean, per officials. Neither hit the base, but the move marks a significant attempt by Iran to reach far beyond the Middle East to threaten the U.S. wsj.com/livecoverage/i…

Good article. Even before the 1980s, US-ally Shah spoke of Iran's stance: "The Straits of Hormuz, which is the entrance to the Persian Gulf, is our jugular vein. We live by that... Nobody could invade us without being forced to crush us because we are not going to surrender."-CBC

Iran is responding to the threat of a ground operation on its soil by stepping up defenses around its biggest oil port, while threatening to attack a wider array of targets around the Gulf wsj.com/world/middle-e… via @WSJ

Here’s the thing about foreign policy & strategic analysts. Most people making political decisions around the world & the people who elect them believe in things like the afterlife, astrology, divine actions & ordained destruction of the world. And we don’t account for this.

Timely reflection by Gary Sick on US-Iran ties. I'll add that the 1979 crisis drove US entry into the Indian Ocean in ways unforeseen under the Shah. Led to 2 carrier battle groups operating in the IO, CENTCOM standup, special ops capability development post-Eagle Claw, etc.
Christiane Amanpour@amanpour

Looking back on the Iran hostage crisis, “nobody has ever forgiven them for it. And I can’t forgive them either,” says former Carter aide Gary Sick. “It was a stupid thing to do and it was hugely costly.”

US Assistant Secretary-level participation is noteworthy at the Bangladesh Embassy reception this evening. Bangladesh also has a US ambassador in its capital, unlike the Smaller South Asian countries of Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Maldives right now.
Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA)@State_SCA

I attended the National Day reception at the Embassy of Bangladesh to speak about our bilateral relations. Today, the U.S.-Bangladesh relationship matters more than ever. Our cooperation in areas including security, trade, and governance, as well as our shared values, make our countries more prosperous and secure.  --S. Paul Kapur

Competition for UN body: As China is making its case to host the secretariat of the UN Ocean/BBNJ Treaty, Belgium will offer its bid on April 1. Chile is also a candidate. A win for 🇨🇳 would expand its global maritime power & shape norms on the high seas: diplomatie.belgium.be/en/news/belgiu…

@clary_co @carin__fischer Thanks for sharing--good to read. Your point about Nixon's early fondness for Pakistan is interesting. His 1953 travels clearly seem formative, seen also in his relationship with the Shah/Iran. Endured to walking with his funeral cortege in 1980

In 1970-'71, the Nixon administration convinced itself that Pakistan was very important because Pakistan was helping facilitate US-China talks. I think this was irrational, but there can be no doubt that Pakistan's middleman role brought it closer to DC. tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

Bangladesh is securing its energy supply with Iran despite the conflict. 5 of 6 ships are LNG from Qatar, per TBS. My take: As 🇧🇩expands its LNG ties with the US via the Gulf Coast, LNG should be exported from the US to Bangladesh as well in the future. tbsnews.net/bangladesh/ene…

@clary_co @carin__fischer Interesting thread. Can you share your paper so I can read? Paywall for me. Timing may have been a factor b/c Kissinger claimed he was well into trip planning for China during Pakistan's crackdown. DK if true, but they may have been more focused on not disrupting momentum (sadly)

@carin__fischer It’s in the screenshots but other countries did offer their services and in my opinion Pakistan was not a necessary interlocutor vs Romania, Poland, etc.

Bridge Colby's speech in India. This sentence suggests a Pacific framing of the I-P branding that I've argued is not always understood in US I-P strategy: "Your country sits astride the Indian Ocean, which is the connective tissue of the Indo-Pacific." war.gov/News/Speeches/…
