During today’s convention, Members of Parliament will elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker presided over by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija. Yesterday, the NRM Parliamentary Caucus endorsed MPs Jacobs Markson Oboth and @Thomas_Tayebwa for the two respective positions. The President will later address the House.

President @KagutaMuseveni has urged National Resistance Movement (NRM) members to exercise discipline and restraint in the race for parliamentary leadership, cautioning against excessive competition for positions as the party moved to determine its preferred candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament. Speaking during the first NRM Parliamentary Caucus meeting at State House Entebbe today, President Museveni said while democracy allows members to express interest in leadership positions, party members should be guided by discipline, experience and collective interests. “When we were fighting, people did not express interest by saying they wanted to fight. You went where you were told to go. Today, because there is peace, many people are expressing interest in contesting for positions. PHOTOS: NRM expression of interest for Speaker, Deputy Speaker positions. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission is undertaking the expression of interest exercise for Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions of the 12th parliament. The exercise that begun yesterday evening runs upto today Saturday evening. The move follows a resolutiom from the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC), that met yesterday to discuss elections of the Speaker and deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament. NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi said interested party members were formally invited yesterday to pick and submit expression of interest forms for the two parliamentary positions. Odoi revealed that all nominees will undergo a shortlisting process before their names are forwarded to another CEC meeting scheduled for tomorrow at State House, Entebbe. Following the CEC deliberations, the ruling party is expected to convene a caucus meeting where NRM MPs-elect will choose the final candidates to carry the party flag in Parliament.

The NRM secretariat leaders led by the Secretary General, Rt.Hon. @TodwongR today Thursday attended the burial ceremony of Mr Kalangwa Kaliisa, the party Chairman for Kayunga district and senior presidential adviser- special duties. Mr. Kalangwa who died in a motor accident earlier this week was described by many as a strong pillar of the Movement who greatly loved and worked for the ruling NRM unconditionally. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has said Uganda is seeking to benefit from Turkmenistan’s vast experience in natural gas production following talks between the party leadership and a delegation from the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan. Speaking after a meeting between NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong and Ata Serdarov, the leader of the visiting delegation, NRM Director for External Relations Pollar Awich said the discussions focused on strengthening political and economic cooperation between the two parties. Awich said the visit by the Turkmenistan delegation was significant because the Central Asian country is among the world’s leading nations in natural gas reserves and production.
