And you can notice from the Saiyan Saga onwards, Goku’s position in the narrative shifts,
Still the main character of course, but he becomes more of a figure to reach,
As in, he’s much less literally present during but he’s the center of Gohan and Vegeta’s goals,
To Both Gohan and Vegeta, Goku represented a goal they wished to reach
With Gohan naturally looking up to his father and how he hoped to and feared being able to live up to him
With Vegeta, his inability to truly surpass Goku for long fueled his anger and a desire to beat him

Something I thought about with Gohan and Vegeta’s introductions with Toriyama’s writing style, Toriyama made it pretty clear and has stated his preferred protagonist to write is the happy go lucky go getters like Goku and Arale, And Gohan’s attitude of being reluctant to fighting was why he initially didn’t want to make him a main character, Yet in the end he wrote Gohan as the “reluctant hero” in the Saiyan arc, Then Vegeta, at the start of the Namek arc he’s very much a full blown villain protagonist, we’d had villains turn good before in Piccolo but in his case, he only really became a POV character once he started changing Meanwhile Vegeta for a decent stretch is a POV AND evil Kinda showing the contrasts between them in Goku
